    owls head tommorow

When I did Owl's Head it was July with high water. I brought a pair of Teva sandals to wear when crossing the streams. On the way out, there was a couple, woman about 50 and the guy was in his sixties and they were at the second stream crossing. He had lost his boots, she lost her hiking...

    Moose on Franconia Ridge

Camped at the Log Cabin on the side of Adams several years ago and a young moose came by around at dusk every night and checked us out. Pretty cool. Just walked by the porch and looked at us out of the corner of his eye and then turned around in the trees and stared at us for a few minutes...

Looking for difficult trails in the Whites

I felt the same way about the Buttress trail. Some others for solitude and steepness are, as mentioned before, the Ammo ravine trail, Six Husbands, Daniel Webster, Howker ridge Trail, my favorite short, steep and quiet is the trail up Mt Willey from the junction with the AT, and Wildcat at the...

Any thoughts on my next 4000 ?

Field Tom and Willey are good peaks for dog and easy on older ones. Have done them three times with all my dogs over the past 20 years. I really like Willey the best. Very often there is no one but you and your dog and the wind. :)

Many Moose, once 12 in 10 days in the early Spring in 1990, two bears, one on the Imp Trail that took off like a four wheel drive up the side of the mountain, several Spruce Grouse up close, a young moose, up real close on the Zeeland trail in the Fall of 2007 who the German woman with me called...

Hammer Time (Favorite short, steep trail sections)

Straight Up If memory serves, the original AT up Old Spec fromGrafton Notch was one mile of straight up trail and vey steep. If you can still find the trail. I has been 25 years since I was on that trail. And, there is always the Flume trail and Howker Ridge. Remember both as being strenuous...

    Who's done the Hamlin/Katahdin loop?

One word, albeit overused - Awesome Climbed K and H in mid-September several years ago in fairly windy conditions via the Knife Edge and looped around H and down to the parking lot. A long day but Pamola and the chasm between it and K were incredible. Several thru-hikers on top. Was wiped...
