    NH Rattlesnakes Article

There are some on Tekoa Mountain in Russell, Mass. I did some hiking there a couple of years ago, and always wore taller leather work boots, just in case. I never saw any. They like talus slopes and similar rocky areas.

The Squam Lakes trails are open as of today! So not closed until Memorial Day as I feared.

Mud season trail closures - new to me

Oddly enough, in many decades of hiking, I've never, until now, run into the concept of trails that don't open until Memorial Day. By chance ,this year, two of my early plans have been nixed due to apparent mud season closures: Squam Range trails in N.H. and Willoughby trails in Vt. For the...

    Construction at Greylock Glen

Went to Greylock today, planning to hike ragged Mountain via the end of Thiel Road. Theil Road is blocked and posted starting at the junction with Gould Road. There is extensive site preparation work being done at the upper end of Thiel Road. There is a very large building (new Greylock Glen...

    Hiker fatality on Mt. Willard

Surprised that this type of accident doesnt happen more often. Last time i was there (years ago) there was nothing to stop someone from walking or slipping over the edge. The report has the body recovered from the face of the cliff. There is a ledge about 40 feet down, must have been from there.

    Summer Ice in the Whites

I'm being pedantic but accurate when I say that nothing within a few thousand miles of here has "ice year round".

    Summer Ice in the Whites

The two sites that hold ice longest are likely the Ice Gulch and (not in the Whites) Deboullie up in northern Maine. People have noted shorter ice retentions into the summer for a long time. One indication is the number of sites in New England that are called "ice caves" that only have ice into...

    Boots fitting remediation question

We'll see...I just put some Superfeet liners in there, but might be a few weeks before I test them out. I wonder if, contrary to TEO's suggestion, the boots are a tad too large, not too small, at least with regard to the right heel area, thus the heel has too much room and moves up and down...

    Boots fitting remediation question

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to try some inserts first, then, if that doesn't work, try John Swanson's stretching method.

    Boots fitting remediation question

I recently got a pair of "lightweight" leather non-custom Limmers. Went 1/2 size smaller than my usual over-the-counter shoe and boots size. After 3 trips totalling about 15 miles, I have a problem with the right boot (left is perfect). I am getting rubbing at the back of the heel, and on both...
