    Combi Boots

That's the best way to answer the question. If you're just dipping your toe in the skating pond, combi boots will be fine. If you want to really get into it, get a separate skate boot. Combi boots will also help your classic skiing by offering a little added support. Combi boots are a good...

US National Parks - now open to mountain bikes?

It works in Acadia. That being said, two things... 1. I agree with only opening "suitable" trails. 2. After a running on the carriage roads in Acadia a couple weeks ago, it is a bit unsettling to see white-knuckled mountain bikers heading at you—these were the masses who had rented bikes in Bar...

    Frontpack?

If you need a pack on the front as well as on the back, maybe you're carrying too much. Just throwing that out there. (Although, if you have a "real" camera, it does make sense to have it up front.)

    Music while hiking

I think the crux of this question lies in the people being surveyed. Most of us on this board spend the week looking forward to escaping to hikes on the weekends. Thus, we've heard enough noise of all kinds during the week that the relative silence/nature sounds of the woods are all we want on...

    North Crocker Elevation

I knew that DougPaul would be on the case! :D So, essentially, you're saying that the sign is using old data. Too bad, because the sign is relatively new. (That's the sign in the burnt orange. Danielle is in the blue.)

    North Crocker Elevation

Curious... Sign on the summit of North Crocker reads 4,168'. My altimeter read 4,160' the other day. I've seen a number of sources, including AMC 4000er Club, list the elevation as 4228'. 4,168' or 4228'? Which is it? Any ideas why the discrepancy?

    Caribou Valley Road

As of yesterday, I can report that Caribou Valley Road all the way to the AT crossing is completely clear, very easily navigated and totally passable...for running or walking . :D Seriously though, you won't make it past the metal bridge without a Jeep, Xterra (which did so yesterday) or other...
