Well, I gotta tell you about this. The guys at Delorme are first class! But let's back up a little bit. I did call tech support yesterday, and I noticed the call lasted about 12 minutes. He spoke in techie language which was alittle hard for me to follow, and I had to explain to him that I am a...

LOL!!! All that, when they could just as easily rpinted "use the data exchange tab located....' Don't they realize that soem rank newbies will want to try out their gear at some point and they should make it a little bit simple for the simple. The techies will speed read right over it anyways...

Poll: Do you typically carry overnight gear on a winter 4K dayhike?

Good point Doug Paul. I've eaten it when skiing, but can't say as I've done so when hiking, aware of what you are popinting out. Good point.

Poll: Do you typically carry overnight gear on a winter 4K dayhike?

We carry all kinds of things with us when day hiking. No tent or bag. But plenty of clothes and head to toe goretex. Many of those clothes will fit under the goretex. Headlamp, check, but we hike at night without them anyways. First aid kit, always. Extra layer of clothing (or 2 or 3)...

Well, I gotta say that I find this whole GPS thing a bit overwhelming. As far as trying to learn what i need and all, I'll bet I only caught the tip of the iceberg, but I hope it's the right iceberg. We ended up getting a Delorme PN-40. Waterproof, floats, bright orange, maps come with it, on...

Spider solo, thanks for the less techie answer. Alot of tech savvy folks here. I suspect we would use it much like you describe, at first anyways. I have found that when I buy something with minimum features, it isn't long before I wish I had bought one with more features and/or expandability. I...

Thanx Doug. I'm kinda burnt out with information overload right now. Gotta let it sink in overnite and re-review in the AM. Again, thanx.

I have a relative who works at Beans, and she suggested Amazon, as it beats the prices she can get.

Dougpaul, I'm looking at that Garmin and it lists for $399 on the link you gave me. Just an FYI. Anyways, I am looking and see this one can take more maps, etc... I originally looked at LL Bean and their $400 model has all the maps (I need) already loaded. Hiking trails, roads, waterways...

DougPaul, I appreciate you explaining what the rating means. I'll watch for that. If it's in the water longer than that, I've probably already given up looking for it. Remix, as far as kayaking with it, I was thinking mainly inland, but in retrospect, we do go in the ocean also, mostly at the...

Folks, I've looked back down the page and do not see any discussion on this subject. Anyone use them? How do you like them? What do they do well. What do you wish you had bought as part of the package? (I.E., did you not buy a unit with enough options or features). Are the waterproof ones...

    2008-10-19 Tom and Field

This was a little different for us this time around, as we were hiking on a Sunday as opposed to our normal Saturday. Saturday was spent performing volunteer work in our community. It turns out that Sunday was the better day anyways. 3 degrees warmer and almost no wind! On the way up, in Conway...

    2008-10-04 Attempt of Mt. Washington

Ummmm.... Yeah, I guess it did get steeper in retrospect. I was a little more concerned with catching up to my wife and not paying so much attention to the grade. There are two really nice waterfalls into it. One is directly into the pool and the other is to the left. I suspect you are correct.

    2008-10-04 Attempt of Mt. Washington

2008-10-04 Attempt at Mt. Washington We got up at 5:30 AM to make this trip. I parked in the Cog railway parking lot and the parking Nazi came over and told me no hiker parking. I said no problem, where can I park. So I parked in the lower lot, oh well. By 9 AM we were hiking up the Ammonusic...
