    Fatality in Franconia Notch?

This is from an article this morning in the Union Leader about a rescue last night (10/18 into 10/19) on the Avalon trail, due to an injured ankle. Anyone know what happened in the notch? “Due to a hiker death in Franconia Notch, this rescue had a skeleton crew for the carry out and they...

    Jefferson Via Edmands

Has anyone been this way recently? Not finding anything on the interwebs. Wondering about the snowfield in particular, and if it even exists this year. And/or is it a sheet of boilerplate. Thanks!

Found: Human waste on Valley Way, Lower Bruin 4/3

Human and dog feces, vomit (oatmeal), in the middle of both trails, mostly between Lower and Upper Bruin, and in the lower Bruin junction itself. Be aware if hiking with a dog or if butt sliding or sledding. Get real people.

    Flume Via Osseo 1/24

Trail Conditions: Lincoln Woods was hard packed and icy. Osseo was choppy for a few at the bottom, but smoothed out nicely until the ladders. Hard packed snowshoe track until here. Ladders are covered with hard pack and some powder with steps kicked in. Spikes worked fine. Drifting above on the...

Tripyramids, Livermore, Scaur Ridge, Tripyramid Loop - 12/27

Date of Hike:12/27/14 Trail Conditions: Just about everything you can think of at one point or another. Mostly crusty, unsupportive, unbroken snow though. Special Equipment Required: Snow shoes, micros and tried crampons on the slide. Could have changed gear often so I opted to suck it up as...

    Hitchin' a ride...Rocky Branch (16) to Pinkham 9/13?

Just throwing this out there. Wondering if anyone would be driving this way in the mid/late afternoon this coming Saturday? I will have a medium sized Australian Shepherd with me (45 lbs). Back of a truck works just fine. Planning to hike Isolation via Glen Boulder and would like to cruise out...

Carrigain via Carrigain Notch, Desolation, Signal Ridge 8/15/14

Trails were what I call damp. Not nearly as wet as I expected with all the rain, but not dry either. My feet stayed dry all day. Some mud here and there but nothing that wasn't easily side stepped. The Carrigain Brook crossing took some thought and care (and maybe some luck), but I again kept my...

Washington-Monroe 4/4/14. Up Ammo down Jewel

Trail Conditions: Ammo was hard, flat and fast. Some ice but not what I expected. I wore crampons expecting ice, but microspikes would have been fine. Monroe loop is a mixture of ice, snow and rocks. Crawford to summit much the same with only occasional snowfields left. Most rocks are still...

    Moosilauke via Carriage Rd 3/29

Date of Hike: 3/29/14 Trail Conditions: I was psyched to see snowmobile tracks hoping to bare boot, but unfortunately it was still knee deep mashed potatoes, so snowshoes it was. Even more unfortunate some moron rode their snowmobile all the way to the actual summit. Trail to the south peak is...

    Lost: iPhone on Dartmouth 11/10

Ya I know, 1 in 1,000,000 but thought I'd throw it out there. And no I did not have the "Where's my Phone" app, but I do now  Pretty sure it came out somewhere between Millen and the eastern sub-peak on Dartmouth. Only really care about the Otter Box at this point as I was due for a free...

    Scar Ridge, Middle Peak. 9/1/13

Left from Little East Pond and found scrappy but manageable going to the ridge. Mostly head down-push through scrub littered with rotten blowdown. Once on the ridge the climb up Middle Scar was not bad at all with lots of little herd/people paths, but fairly steep in spots. Took a more direct...

    Sugarloaf (Nash Stream) 8/31/13

This trailhead is hard to locate as it is not marked. And since I lost all the gauges in my truck on the way, I couldn’t measure the 8.4 miles from the Emerson Rd. intersection. It is on the left just after a small bridge. It looks like a driveway for a camp, but it is actually a snowmobile...

    Waumbeck via Starr King 2/5/13

Trail Conditions: Very thin dust covered crust down low, lots of intermittent ice flows throughout the hike, primarily on the section after leaving the logging road, these could be easily skirted if needed. A few smaller ones higher up on the traverse would be more difficult to go around on the...

    Madison & Adams 11/23/12 via Valley Way-Watson Path-Star Lake-Air Line trails

Valley Way and Watson path uneventful. No real ice to speak of, no blowdowns, mud was frozen enough. Star Lake trail has some icy areas past the hut that can be worked through or around without traction aids. Air Line had a quite a few icy areas that could all be worked around but some required...

Webster & Jackson via Webster Cliff, Webster Jackson trails

Date of Hike: 10/18/2012 Trail Conditions: Webster Cliff to Webster mostly dry, with some wet, slippery rocks. Leaves and pine spills added to the fun. Muddy between Webster and Jackson, some areas are difficult to get through or around without getting wet. More slick rock on the way down...
