    Animal Encounters on the Trail

I was camping by Unknown Pond with my son. I left him to rest in the tent and went down to the water's edge to wait for a moose. It looked like the perfect place for a moose, so I thought I would try to see how long I could sit very quietly and maybe one would emerge. I was surprised at how...

    Backpacking/Climbing Knives of the 1960s, 70s and 80s?

When I started hiking in the 70s, I carried a Swiss Army Knife. It was probably purchased at Clapp & Treat. I preferred the SAK to my brother's scout knife because his would get rusty. I still have that SAK today. Paul K

Mt. Tom, Field and Willey on 2-16-13

Chris It was good to see you on Willey and Field. It was a steep climb up Avalon, but a quick slide down. Thanks for the trip report and nice photos. Until we meet up again. Paul

Another Lost hiker rescue on Washington

This isn't that complicated. If you give a guy a ride to the Whites, and you know he is depending on you for a ride back, you don't go home without him. You don't have to hike with him, but you don't drive off and leave him behind.

    Unknown Pond info

Hang your food, if not for the bears then for the mice. We camped there a few years ago and had mice on our packs within 20 minutes of dropping them at the tentsite. We hung the food from a tree and had no further problem. Also saw a moose beside the pond.

    Can You Top This?

Drive time to hike time ratio To avoid those marathon round-trips, I have tried to strictly follow my drive time to hike time ratio rule. The rule is that the time on the trail has to be longer than the time in the car. From Boston to the Whites for day trips I have sometimes stretched this...

    Calling Cards

I am still charmed by Peter, my hiking companion's, call of "Yoo hoo. Lost in the woods."

Did/Is anyone saving one 4000'er for last?

I didn't realize I was hiking a list until I was more than halfway through, so it didn't occur to me to save a special peak for last. I've been at 47 and holding for a couple years now, with just Cabot left. I'm in no hurry to finish. Actually, with just one left, I like the idea of not...

New Insect repellents recommended by CDC

Shelf Life of DEET Does anyone know the shelf life of DEET? Should I throw out last year's bottle and get a new one, or will it still be just as strong?

True confessions - They're funny cuz they're true.

I was a teenager on my first trip to the Whites and I had no idea what I was doing. With my friends I had planned a three day backpacking trip based solely on looking at the map. We had little understanding of the terrain. We were happily heading up Madison when we lost the trail. Of course...

    The Long Trail

How long does it take? It took me eleven years. You don't have to do it all at once. Do what you can, and pick up where you left off next time.

    Looking for Koflach Degre owners!

I have been using the Degres for several winters and have been pleased. I rented a pair from REI before I bought them, and I recommend that approach. They are not especially comfortable for walking on the level, like a road approach to the trailhead, but they are just fine up and down the...

You know might be addicted to hiking...

    - You make the dog go out on a cold winter night because you want to test your new mittens - After a stressful day at work you take the D Line home so that you can stop at REI (just to look) - All the reading materials in the bathroom are gear catalogs
