    TNF Venture jacket

Hi Jon, I've had one for two years now and as it's great for the money as a simple shell, it's not as breathable as Gore or of course soft shell. I would never use it for anything more than running to the store in a rain storm and i just bought it for that reason. as It doesn't breath well. If...

    Recommendations for cheap poles

Cheap VS expensive debate I tend to try and buy more expensive things from reputable companies and stores that stand behind their products. Sure the more expensive ones might not show much difference, but many of the good outdoor companies have lifetime warrenties or maybe the store will help...

softshell pants: mammut or wild things? or something else?

I just got myself a pair of Winter Wanderer pants by Mountain hardwear. THEY ARE AWESOME!! A schoeler like material, very stretcy, fleece lined pockets, and the coolest thing is the bottoms have a small hidden drawcord inside so you can cinch them closed shut, but you'd never know the drawcords...

    What is it?

it looks like the back of a truck bed....the cris cross pattern gives it away.... what's that little metal thing on top of it? :p

    north face insulated boots

I know nothing about those, but I've used the north face approach shoes and trail runners over the years and I love the quality...

    The Eiger Sanction

I couldn't seem to get over all the womanizing, chauvinistic attitudes portrayed in the movie...I had to stop it half way through

has this ever happened to you?

So I have this small hill near me that's really popular for hikers and walkers...nothing big, only a few hundred feet high. At the bottom there's a pavilin for picnicers and scouts to have bbq's... So a few weeks back i was doing my normal sunday mornig hike, first one there, it was like 7:30...

    Soft Shells???

Well, there are three types of way to lose heat, conduction, convection and radiation... If there were no wind, we could all do well staying warm with just thick fleece, but that's never the case, wind will go right through fleece and steal that heat. now under a jacket (windproof) a thicker...

    Winter Pants-- advice

I agree that sometimes a windproof or waterproof pant is a little much, even though it says breathable, it is never even close to comfortable for me. For lack of any other way to describe it, I get really uncomfortable in the crotch region when I sweat down there to much...More air circualtion...

    Outdoor books and upset hikers

I love to read, I read every chance I get, my mom was a librarian so it's real bad for me..it's in my blood.. Anyway, I tend to read a lot of outdoor and travel books, things that relate to my life right now. One of my fav authors is bill Bryson, i'm sure you all know him for A Walk In The...

    Soft Shells???

Soft shell isn't so much the new rage, and especially schoeler, it's been used in europe for years, we just have an issue wearing things here in the states that aren't totally bombproof. Think of how often you've worn a gore shell or whatever in the rain and found you never really needed it...

Thinking of buying MSR snowshoes? Think again.

I just got the new MSR Lightning Ascents, supposedly these are the killer new rigs to have, but of course living in CT (no, I'm not really AL) with no snow doesn't help. http://www.msrcorp.com/snow/lightning_ascent.asp

    Monadnock on New Years Day

Yes, I was confused by the weather too..I pictured myself being this lone hiker on a whiteout blizzard consumed moutain top, but it was anything but...the crowds certainly weren't bad for the monadnock phenomenon...maybe saw 15 other hikers today. All in all, it was great, I hiked a new trail...
