    Iceland

once, while hiking from Nippletop, i met a couple from Canada. they were well travelled, and our conversation about hiking eventually included some chat about Iceland. these folks had gone there during the summer solstice for a hike. they claimed that this is THE best time to go. apparently...

    Long Path help

Snowshoe - After the previous suggestions of others, I went back and reviewed my older copy of the guide book. They were right about the SRT, and your post certainly reinforces it. There's no doubt I will skip the road walk thru Orange Cnty. (Sounds like good winter hiking simply for the...

    Long Path help

Rivet - Thanks for the listing of the high points (no pun intended). Sounds like the originators of this trail knew their geography and didn't just make it a long, boring affair. I think this area you describe will have much appeal, probably much more than the area closer to the NYC. Mark -...

    new member introduction!

Nate, to keep in shape you might want to put in a few miles on the Blue Trail system. It's 400 mi of trails maintained by the CT Forest & Park Assn. The have an office in Middlefield and publish a hike book called, Connecticut Walk Book. Last I knew it was in its 13th edition. Hikes are...

    Long Path help

Mark, thank you so much for your suggestions. It is always helpful to hear from someone who has gone through an area and can give some reflection. The section of road walks sounds less than appealing, and I certainly overlooked the section north of Windham Peak. Have you done any of the...

    Long Path help

This spring and summer, I'd like to knock off some sections of the Long Path. Being a Catskill 35er, I have done the section through that area. Could anyone share information on the section between Harriman State Park and the 'Gunks? Any recommendations on pitfalls or other things to avoid...

Anyone interested to snowshoe Catamount Trail days of 19 to 26 Feb?

Have school vacation that week, and plan to do some "dayhikes" showshoeing sections of the Catamount Trail. Soloing has been OK for a while, but backtracking is just too taxing. Would be grateful to hear from anyone who would like to share so we can make one-way hikes on the trail. I live in...

    Snowshoeing this weekend..but where?

Catamount Trail snowshoe conditions Have been on the Catamount Trail several times so far. NOT good enough conditions for snowshoes. I've been hiking with crampons because of the 2" base of ice. It's not bad, but it's not as much fun as snowshoes.

    bethel, ME activities?

Elephant Mtn. is also close by for a hike. For other entertainment, I recommend, "Frenchman's Leap(?)". It is a glacial pothole at the bottom of a waterfall. Its location is on the way to the Sunday River resort area. I forget the exact routes. However, ask any local and they will be glad...

    Keeping Middle Age at Bay

At 53, I have already finished the NE 111 and the Catskill 3500. The best two pieces of advice I have read here from my colleagues on this thread is to keep the weight down and use poles. Seeing to those two items has been a great advantage. Even though I use a treadmill, stationary bicycle...

The ultimate backpacking destination in Europe?

While hiking last year, I met a couple from Ottawa. They recalled their most exciting trip with great gusto. They hiked a system of trails in Iceland on June 21, the summer solstice. Apparently, the sun is up all night (i.e. 7 PM to 7 AM). Local hikers follow trails all night, in the light...

    No Gol'dang snow!

Been trying to snowshoe the southern end of the Catamount Trail in VT since Xmas time. Brought snowshoes, but with only four inches of snow, it was easier to bareboot the sections I did. Recent single digit daytime temps take a lot of the appeal away from snowshoeing, too.

JimB, thanks for the info. Know I can speak with a dealer who has a knowledge of the product, and can answer some questions. Have a Happy New Year!

    Snowshoes redux

Thanks for your positive feedback. It's interesting when I visit the websites of snowshoe manufacturers. Each provide some information on their products, but all do not give full details. For example, Sherpa doesn't list the weight of their shoes, and Northerlites doesn't give any details...

    Snowshoes redux

Have just learned of snowshoe company called NorthernLites. Website looks interesting, yet is full of hype like any other dealers'. Has anyone out there bought, used, trashed this brand?
