    Hitchcock Traverse

Onestep and I did this in June 2008. It took us 12 hours, mostly because I'm slow. But your planned route was essentially what we did.

That Railroad near VanDyke and Merrill on the Beaudry

Hey PB, The railroad in the Lowelltown-Skinner area is on Passamaquoddy tribal land. Or at least the access to it is through that land. On my trip to Merrill-Van Dyke with Onestep and Pig Pen in Oct 06 we took the right (wrong) fork and very quickly came to a posted sign. It looked like they...

    Spencer Road in norther Maine?

It's been a couple of years but the first 12 miles or so in from Rt 201 are usually 35-45 MPH easy. After that the road narrows a little and you have to slow down. The section that Bigmoose mentioned is winding, narrow and has several culverts that may washout in wet conditions. Jim

Bald Mt via Long Pond Trail 6/8/09

Followed up Gore with this PM hike. This trail was not muddy at all. Almost a sidewalk in the lower portions. Steeper near the top with some erosion issues. No register found in this cabin. Firetower in great shape with extraordinary views. Roundtrip time of 2 Hours 5 min. Gamehiker Jim from...

    Gore Mtn 6/8/09

Trail is well blazed but quite muddy. The moose use this trail on a regular basis. The white blazes and some of the terrain reminded me of the AT. One stream crossing moderately difficult but found well placed rocks just downstream. The register is new, placed in March of 09. Bob Packard was...

    Non-hiking deathmarches

In 2004 I was one of 4 adult chaperones along with 11 High School students (including my then 14 year old daughter) whose 1st day of April Vacation went like this: Leave Portland at 2:30 AM Drive to Manchester Fly Manchester-Charlotte-Mexico City Go thru long customs line at Airport Picked up...

Did you See Rock City or Ruby Falls? When I was newly married our first apartment was just over the crest of Missionary Ridge later we lived very close to Kennesaw Mtn Park and the New Hope battlefield in Georgia. Being interested in Civil War History I was very aware that many young people...

    2009 Year in Preview...

2009 is a little more up in the air for me at this point since my relatively stable employment world has imploded in the past 2 months. I do have a minimum # of peaks to do in order to finish the 3K's on my desired schedule. I am already 8 weeks ahead of my 2008 pace on that. I would like to...

The Year 2008 in Review - Post away!

80 New England 3K's- have now completed 65% of the total. All 5 Hitchcocks in one day! A week in Vermont climbing 22 peaks and dodging numerous T-Storms and killer mutant raspberries. Barren and Scar Ridge on back to back Saturday's in October. (Barren was easier, Scar Ridge more pleasant...

    Woodlawn Mt(Vt) - route info?

The shortest route is the one I took in June via the Gravel pits on the Danby Mt Road (I think) from the East. It is only a third of a mile from the top of the pit to the ATV road that leads to the summit. It is however, really steep and in June horribly overgrown but may not be so bad this time...

    Are 3k's becoming trendy?

Of the 12 Maine 3Ks I have done this year I can honestly say I was the first visitor to all of them in 2008. Some had not been visited for over 14 months. Same is true for the last NH 3K I did, South Hale, first person there in 10 months. I don't believe the 3K's will ever be much of a trend...
