Galehead, South Twin, & North Twin 5/19/2013

Fitting... and possibly demoralizing! ;) I may not be able to get it out of my head next time I'm out there. Good luck on your next trip! Uh-oh... Kinsmans you say? We may have to discuss your itinerary and see if I can join you for a day or two... :D

    Slides On The Tripyramids

My first ever slide climb was Macomb with a summer camp group in 1992, when the 1990 slide was still quite fresh. Our head counselor on that trip gave us all the instruction to yell "rock" if we dislodged anything from what was then (and is still to this day) a very rubble-filled slide. It's...

Thanks! ..and you're welcome, I guess. :) Very glad we hiked two weekends ago and not this past weekend! Nice screen name, btw!

Galehead, South Twin, & North Twin 5/19/2013

(Cross-posted from adkhighpeaks forums... and delayed a week due to my spam filter catching the e-mail change confirmation. Some small edits due to said delay as well as posting in this particular venue.) Chicaandinista and I were in New Hampshire last weekend to bag a few new peaks and grab a...

Sleeping Giant with my son, 4/25

I have traditionally done a nifty little loop around Sleeping Giant in Hamden CT on the last weekend in April in past years, but not the last couple years due to more important things to deal with -- namely my now-two-year-old twins. This year, however, with good (yet warm!) weather looming, I...

    Adk "Ultramarathon"... wish us luck!

Doesn't count as failure to me if both guys got out OK. As many wise folks have reminded me over the years, "The mountains will still be there..."

    Carry Trail>Colvin-Blake Col

My book is at home but I believe you are correct. FWIW, that trail is stee-ee-eep. Better to descend that ascend, IMHO, if you have a choice, though the footing can be loose if it's dry (as it was when I last descended it in 2002).

Off-topic alert Prino, are you a Derby County fan?

    Two Whiteface Questions

The guidebook has mentioned these signs for years, but I didn't see any of them, let alone the "old illegible sign that points NW" at the Esther junction when I went through on two weekends in 2004 (once for Esther, then again for Whiteface after a thunderstorm turned us back the first time)...

    Sleepy Giant - CT

I'm fond of taking the yellow trail out from the picnic area, picking up the violet trail on the back side, then using the red circle to get me to the blue trail on the ridge, and then on to the tower. Then I use the tower trail to get down. The great part is you can mix and match just as much...

    Summer/thunderstorm Season Is Here

This is (unsurprisingly) a hot topic at the moment. Lots of good info in this thread on another site. Post #10 is particularly informative. Everyone be safe out there!

    blue berry trailhead

Yes, the trailhead is at Marcy Field. I can't speak to water or a marked summit, however, as the only time I've climbed Porter from this side, I went up from the Garden (back in the old days when you went through people's backyards!).

ADK rookie need help identify mountains

You're right about Cheney Cobble and Allen in pic #1, Mavs. Allen's so fuzzy I didn't recognize it on my first pass. But Item #1 in pic #2 is definitely Giant, not Hurricane, correct?

ADK rookie need help identify mountains

Your captions for pic1 are correct, except that #10 is Saddleback, not #3 (which is a shoulder of Basin). I don't think I see Gooseberry anywhere in that picture. Here are my best guesses at filling in the blanks where I can for pic2: 1 Giant 2 Rocky Peak Ridge 3 --- 4 Round 5 Noonmark 6 7...

    another black fly question

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say they'll be near their peak, unfortunately. I used to do summer camp in that area the last two weeks of June when I was a teenager. They were inescapable.
