    Magalloway Cave 7-1-2016

You are correct, it is far easier on a snowmobile. You can ride right to it (I have a few times now). It can be a popular spot at times in the winter and will get packed down enough that almost any rider could easily get there.

    Ski resort parking areas

I was in the Rangeley area two weeks ago and drove into Saddleback to check it out on a day I wasn't hiking. Only a couple of people appeared to be in the condos. Did see one or two cars in the lot that could have been hiking. And I think there were two cars parked by the real-estate office...

    Trail Litter

Isn't good beer normally in a bottle instead of can, inevitably making it heavier to carry before leaving the bottle on the side of the trail? (Full disclosure, I'm a non-drinker and son of someone who drinks Coors Light)

    Trail Litter

Personally, I try to pick up the trash as I see it. If I say "I'll get that on the descent" I usually forget about it and don't even see it again. I won't pick up tp, tissues, band-aids, and the like for obvious health reasons. The small wrappers usually go into pocket that rarely get used...

    Trail Litter

I thought it was a great idea when I first saw Clif's "Litter Leash" on their energy jell shot packets. Making it so the part that you pull off to open it stays with the packaging. It'd be great if more companies could incorporate something like that.

    Trail Litter

It seems like to me that there are always some of those tear off pieces like you mention, but not many of them (in the whites). I'll pick them up when I see them and toss them in a pocket. The more popular the peak, the more likely you are to find that bigger items like water bottles and...

National Park Proposal East of Baxter Heating up

I went to college in Rochester, and whenever someone asked where I was, I'd likely say NY. They would then ask how I liked the city. "Don't know, never been. It's also a state too."

    Mt Monadnock - Marlborough trailhead

NETC Trail Report from Apr 24 says... "Room for several cars in the trail head lot, but the road to it (Class VI portion of South Shaker Farm Rd) is rough, with potential for bottoming out in low-clearance cars. Drive with care. "

    Mitzpah Spring Hut Renovations?

Last spring they had a pile of debris (still mostly under snow) in the same spot when I stayed there during self service season. The caretaker said she was throwing what melted out of the snow onto the pile so it was in one place. They were supposed to be coming soon to start taking it out at...

    Your NE67 Finish

I finished my 67 with a winter hike of Mansfield. I was finishing up my NE67 in a single year and as I neared the end, I wanted to finish that goal at the same time as finishing my first visit to each of the 67 (I had done all the NH48 before trying for the NE67 in one year). As with almost...

    Calendar Grid Opportunity this Monday

I keep track of the days hiked on 4Ks for my own entertainment, but am not planning to work on that until after many of the other lists and things I want to do(if at all). I do keep track of days of the year hiked for Mt. Monadnock as that is my local peak and I enjoy the history of the...

Hiking in the extreme cold this weekend?

I'm planning on a quick hike of Monadnock Saturday morning. I am heading to the top of the state Saturday afternoon/evening for the long weekend and want to get in something as I haven't had plans work out much yet this winter. Monadnock is local for me, so it makes sense with my plans. It's...

Checklist for winter trip to Baxter (bunkhouse/cabin)

While talking with a ranger in Baxter 2 summers ago, he told a story about a pair of hikers chipping through the ice at Chimney Pond to get water. They didn't treat it and both got sick. Could be just a way to get everyone to treat water, but how much would you want to risk it in the park...

LOST HIKER IN Spaulding mountain area maine.

The topo lines on the image included in the article would also show a significant elevation difference between the path/trail and where she was. That would also add to the difficulty in spotting her.
