    Trailless Dixes from the Bouquet

Our party of 8 hiked in Saturday afternoon, base-camped in the valley of the South Fork of the Bouquet River, then Sunday followed a good and well-broken route from where the Hough and East Dix branches join the Bouquet, up to the Clark (East Dix) - Grace (South Dix) col. Summit ridge herdpath...

    Seward, Donaldson & Emmons

Our party of four base-camped at the bottom of the Calkins Brook herdpath. We did Donaldson & Emmons on Saturday and Seward on Sunday. All wore snowshoes (MSRs) above base-camp and traction aids of choice for the approach. We had hoped to ski the approach, but there was not enough snow. Road...

Onondaga ADK group of 12 followed a good trail a few days old to both summits. Trail is well-packed, easy to follow. Indian Pass Brook well frozen over.

    Peggy O'Brien vacancy March 7-10

I have rented Grace Camp and Camp Peggy O'Brien for three nights, Sunday March 7 through Wednesday March 10. Due to a late cancellation, I have one opening in Camp Peggy O'Brien. This is a twelve-bunk cabin owned by the ADK, near Johns Brook Lodge, about a 3.5 mile hike in from the Garden...

    Colvin, Blake, Nippletop

Well-packed snow trails to all three summits. H. G Leach trail to Dial and lowest part of Gill Brook trail appeared to be unbroken on 1/10.

Our party of five plus 3 dogs camped at Slide Brook. Saturday climbed Macomb slide, then Carson (South Dix), Grace (East Dix), Carson again, Pough and Hough. Three continued on to Dix and a head-lamp return to camp. 2 plus the dogs took the path from the Hough-Pough col to Lillian Brook to...

Marshall via Herbert Brook Jan 3

Red trail from Upper Works to Flowed Lands: no problems with stream crossings or wet spots, tho skiers would want more snow. Followed tracks out across Flowed Lands. Skidoc22's group made 8 friends. We followed their 12/30 track (mostly) from the red trail to the summit. Good route, thanks...

    Campsite on Mt. Marshall?

Are there any designated primitive campsites along either of the Marshall herdpaths? I camped high up Herbert Brook some years back before new DEC High Peaks regulations, & was wondering if there is anyplace along the herdpath where camping is feasible and not prohibited.

    MacNaughton 1/6/2008

The Blue trail from its beginning at the Indian Pass trail, to Scotts Clearing, Scotts Pond, to its end at Wallface Ponds, and from there a good path from the channel connecting the ponds to the summit of MacNaughton, has been broken, and proudly, by the Rochester Winter Mountaineering Society...

    flying with gas stoves

I'm planning a trip to Montana soon. I've sent brand-new, never used stove & fuel bottles ahead by UPS, but will bring them back in checked luggage. Any suggestions on how to make stove & fuel bottles completely free of fuel residue & fumes?

bushwhack from Porter to Big Slide?

Has anyone bushwhacked from Porter to Big Slide? I'm considering a trip from Cascade Rte 73 trailhead to Cascade, Porter and Big Slide, and would rather not go all the way down to the Garden and climb the Brothers to get from Porter to Big Slide. Planning on mid-January, so probably not much...

    roof racks

Anybody have a recommendation for a roof rack that won't cause a leak? I have a 1994 Ford Taurus, & Barrecrafters racks with the hooks for that model. They press on the weatherstripping & water pours in, in the rain or car wash. I don't know why they ever designed cars without rain gutters.

    MacIntyre Range

On a day hike in September 1999, I had climbed Algonquin, Boundary and Iroquois, then descended the southwest side of Iroquois, towards Marshall, to the top of Iroquois Pass (apparently also known as Cold Brook Pass, according to a sign I saw on the more recent trip). On that occasion, we hiked...
