    Custom boot makers?

Yup, that you did. See, Gary Barlow works on his own and, sometimes he works for other corporations - he shuts his business down for upwards of a year, making custom shoes products. When I needed my boots repaired, he wasn't there and I found a local shoe shop to do the necessary work...

Nettles on North Dome & Sherrill?

When I ascend ND, I usually go via the north ridge, by way of the trail - go about a half mile and gain the ridge, quickly; the sooner one accesses it, the easier the cliff band. With regard to Sherrill, I have only ascended it in fall and winter, so I'm unfamilier with nettles from Rte 42...

    Coolest Place You've Ever Slept?

At the base of the Skyladder route on Mt. Andromeda, Canadian Rockies. No tent, just pads and pits. Overnight, a pika chewed a hole in my climbing partner's backpack and consumed part of his breakfast!! Moose

Nettles on North Dome & Sherrill?

Trust me - you could go up there, NAKED and BAREFOOT with jewelweed rubbed all over thy body - and you won't feel a sting, at least not a chemical sting!! Gee, I wish it worked for Lyme's disease........ Moose

Nettles on North Dome & Sherrill?

The first time I ascended Rusk I was wearing a pair of thick nylon hiking pants. The nettles stung thru them. Upon descent, I encountered a DEC Forest Ranger; we were making small talk and he inquired about the state of the nettles. "Waist deep in places." I said. "There's a great...

Nettles on North Dome & Sherrill?

Jewelweed helps greatly. It's a lobed leaf with an orange and yellow flower that grows in and among the Nettles. One year I applied it to my bare legs and was fine for an hour as I hiked thru the nets. Moose

    Rusk 22 Dec '07

Trail toward Hunter was packed by previous snowshoer's as was path up mt. Snowshoes were required for the 12 to 14 inches of snow that was dense in its first two inches. Our group of eight followed Hoosier's track for about 0.15 tenth and then head N, then NW. Breaking trail on steeper...

    odd sighting

Last weekend, 15 Sept. I inadvertently flushed a blue heron out of a swamp on Rte 214, while doing a Club activity. Very large bird and the only photo I took was its wings in the air. Moose

5th Annual Adirondack BBQ and Hiker Gathering

Missed the annual bash, again....no wonder the shelves at E-Town Grand Union were devoid of my favorite ales. and all thos cars driving in and around E-t, filled with DAS (dirty and stinky hikers); it was heaven come true for one short weekend! Sorry to have missed it, for five years in a...

Does anyone know where this is?

The photograph is one of a series taken of the approach to a teahouse in China. Someone sent it to me about six weeks ago. it originated from a Chinese website: http://club.pchome.net/forum.php?areaid=1&topicid=15 If one likes to dig, then good luck. Otherwise, send me a PM and I will...

    North Dome(yes) & Sherrill(almost)

Sherrill From the Parking area, follow the woods road and then cut off it, taking an 80 degree magnetic bearing to the summit. Nice woods, few cliffs and nice views. I have been planning a trip for a while, to search for the wreck near the summit. Dan Case, you interested? Moose

How much water do you carry ?

And no disrepect taken, either. Also, remember -- unless one's lunch is stone hard rock pretzels -- everything has water in it, especially fruit and whatever vegetables one may have. Granted, if I'm hiking to Haystack in the Dacks, I'm taking at least two liters and a filter. There's a bit...

How much water do you carry ?

The very act of making a pit stop or two is one's body saying that you have consumed too much water. Also, caffeine - a mild diuretic - tends to expel water from one's body. Best to leave caffeine alone prior to an outing. I used to drink far too much water and couldn't sleep as a result...

How much water do you carry ?

Yesterday I hiked about seven miles and drank about a third of a liter. It was a cool day (50 o) and I hiked two miles uphill, two miles down hill (Catskills) and the rest was easy rolling. I don't hike in extremes (> 90 o / < +10 o), I'm not fast hiker and I'm lean. Moose

How much water do you carry ?

I spoke with my cardiologist, who is an avid cyclist. I mentioned that after a hike, my urinary output is increased. She said that most people drink too much water and that the body regulates its water capacity. She suggested that I carry a liter and drink when I feel the need to. I...

    magellan explorist 500

I went from a Magellan SporTrak Color to a Garmin 60Csx. Each has it's dis / advantages. I like the maps on the latter, but the former has a far better antenna with the ability to pick up satellites under heavy canopy; I have even picked up satellites inside my home. Moose
