I will be going to California for my brother's wedding on Oct 2 in Oakland. It is near San Francisco. I'll be "stuck" in the area for a few days. I am not interested in any city-centric tourism.

Does anyone know of any decent hikes, peaks, or other outdoor stuff that I could do wile out there? My maps show some very nice parks, but they are a bit far to drive, two ~ three hour drive one way. I'm looking for something closer by, and would not require a lot of gear.

Thanks for any input, or suggestions on better places to look on line.

For reference, I have hiked most of the White Mountains.

Good recommendations so far. Here are a few more:

Point Reyes National Seashore - some great trails and hikes. We were on the Tomales Point trail a few days ago and saw several dozen elk, and all kinds of cool sea birds at the end of the point. A few weeks ago I did an 18-mile loop with a friend, hiking up Mt. Wittenberg, then around all kinds of trails ranging from cool fern-lined pine forests, to rocky coastal bluffs and Arch Rock, to oak and madrone-filled rolling hills. More info here:

There are all kinds of nice trails around the bay itself, up in the hills above Oakland and Berkeley, and especially in the Santa Cruz mountains between San Francisco and San Jose.

Here are two decent sites where you can browse some of those hikes:
