Trails: AT from East Flagstaff Rd to Caratunk
Conditions: Trail was a stream, mud pit, swamp and river in almost all spots. The rivers were running high, and we had to ford three streams plus the Pierce Pond dam. Yes, there were a few dry areas, but the overwhelming word for the day was WET! The trail could use many more bog bridges in several sections, and several of the bridges already in place were close to being overwhelmed by the volume of water.
Comments: As stated above, the trail was wet, as were we, as rain fell several times throughout the day. We started at 8am at the road, and ran when we could to make up time, knowing we had to get to the Kennebec by 4pm to make the ferry across! Saw three thru-hikers and 2 others out in the rain. Otherwise, we had the trail to ourselves. Blueberries were abundant along East Carry Pond, and Pierce Pond looked serene and a beautiful spot to swim, if we hadn't already been so wet We made it to the Kennebec as the sun was coming out, at 3:15pm, in plenty of time to get canoed across. The current was swift and the river deep; can't imagine why anyone would try to ford/swim it when the ATC offers the ferry for free!
A solid hike, not too difficult terrainwise, but made more complicated by the ridiculously wet conditions. Still, as always, fun to get out, and even better to know we were going home at the end of the day to a shower and dry clothes
