Heads-up Basin Mountain hikers:
A section of trail running along the ledge above the cliff northeast of Basin summit has collapsed and a reroute was worked Sunday afternoon. In addition to the section that collapsed, other parts of the trail along the ledge and possibly the soil and brush immediately above the ledge have been undermined and are at risk to fall away. Hikers are advised to follow the reroute and stay well away from the damaged section of the traditional trail.

Undermined section of trail. Old trail fell down the rock face on the right:

The collapsed trail is below this rock chute which leads to Basin summit:

During the night of Tuesday September 4th, 4.5 inches of rain fell in a few hours, this is likely was was the final straw for the ledge after the 2011 spring and late summer downpours, the damage was reported to DEC on Friday September 7.
