Hikin' the scree on Shasta....
Conditions: 3/14 Abol bridge to Abol Campground is barebootable - very hard packed and ideal for sled hauling. Abol trail to base of Abol Slide - well packed trench - we wore snowshoes, but could be barebootable.

Abol slide - mostly hard snow with small crust on top, or rock and ice after about 2/3 of the way up.

Tablelands to Baxter and Hamlin peaks, rock, hard snow and ice.

Equipment: Nothing to Abol Camground, snowshoes used to base of slide, but one could bareboot it. Crampons needed from base of slide to the top of both peaks. (tho, one did shoe all the way up) Poles or ice axe for slide. Crampons recommended for going down slide. Typical care needed up slide, few places a slip would require self arrest.

Above slide to baxter and hamlin peaks - crampons, its all rock, hard snow and ice.

Group of us day hiked this. Congrats to Marc Howes for finishing W 100 highest on Hamlin peak. Great bluebird day up there, awesome views of everything. roughly 30 mph winds (sustained) above slide top out. Baxter rules and it rules more with great people to share it with.
