Trail Conditions: With all the rain we've had recently, we found the trails in the Pemi to be in pretty good shape. A few muddy spots here and there, plus some blowdowns that can easily be stepped over, but overall not too bad. The only obstacle was the crossing of Cedar Brook. Rock hopping is next to impossible, so bring teva's or crocks and prepare to wade.

Special Equipment Required: Bug spray, teva's or crocks for water crossings, hiking poles to help with water crossings.

Comments: With the imminent removal of the suspension bridge over the Pemi we figured this is our only chance to get across it. For good measure we also went out to the bridge on the Thoreau Falls trail to cross that bridge as well. Our hike went up the East Side trail to the Cedar Brook trail, to the Wilderness trail, followed that to Thoreau Falls trail, turned around and returned to the suspension bridge, crossed it, then followed the Wilderness trail all the way back to Lincoln Woods. The only problem we had all day was the one crossing of the Cedar Brook. It was flowing fast and about thigh deep. Teva's and hiking poles were definitely needed to get across this otherwise gentle stream.

On our way out we stopped at Franconia Falls. It's flowing fast and furious as if all the snow just melted off of the big peaks. Definitely a site to behold!

One final note, the Pemi river is flowing very fast and in no circumstance should an attempt be made to cross the stepping stones at the East Side campground. The stones are completely submerged and are under at least a foot of water.
