Finally got to hike Carrigain via Signal Ridge Trail, Carrigain Notch Trail and Desolation Trail. Great alternative route through some lesser used trails and some very scenic areas, particularly Carrigain Notch Trail between the height of land and the junction with Desolation Trail.

There were a few areas where a short section of trail is completely missing thanks to Irene - one on the lower part of Signal Ridge Trail that's previously been mentioned, and two on Carrigain Notch Trail - all are easy to navigate around. There are at least 2 or 3 blowdowns along the way that will require a chainsaw to completely remove, including an annoying one with tons of branches on Carrigain Notch Trail shortly before the junction with Desolation Trail.

As advertised, Desolation Trail is wicked steep, but definitely a good challenge with spectacular views at the top. We didn't see a single person until we got to the summit.

Hannah had a good day - plenty of mud and water for most of the hike (except on the steeper sections both up an down Carrigain), and even on the steeps of Desolation Trail she was ahead of me almost the entire time.

Felt like a mid-summer day with the temps, but fortunately the clouds all cleared by the time we got to the summit. What a perfect day for the first hike of the fall!!
