Tom, Jeff and I had a lofty goal today - clear/break trail and summit the three Carters. We mananged to summit two of them while clearing the trails along the way.
We spent 2 hours clearing blowdowns on the 19 Mile Brook trail to the junction of the Carter Dome trail. Then another 2 hours to Zeta Pass. After a lunch break we cleared the Carter Dome trail to Carter Dome for 3 1/2 hours. Next up was South Carter. From there we spent an hour finding and clearing the trail towards Middle Carter but decided at 6:30 it best to turn back since it was well past dark and resembled the Scar Ridge bushwhack more than a trail. Made it about 1/3 of the way. On our way back down to the car we cleared out a bit more, so anybody who needs Carter Dome and South Carter will have a very easy time of it.
We all learned a whole new level of respect for the AMC, Trail Adopters, RMC, and others who maintain the tails that we all enjoy hiking on.
12 1/2 hours on the trail today - Priceless!
