I'm looking to finish the required winter peaks this season so if anyone wants to join me on:

  • a hike up Balsam Mountain with a side trip to Belleayre
  • a Blackhead Range traverse
  • a Burroughs Range circular
I should be available almost any weekend for the rest of this month.

Alistair, how about the 24th or 25th?

I know you're a tough hiker so which one of those options seems the most challenging to you?

Hey there. I live in Mt. Tremper in the Catskills and I'm looking for almost the same. I am available any weekend in January both Saturdays and Sundays to hike (I'd be hiking solo anyway) I have some personal goals for the winter. I would like to do a couple of bushwhacks as well including Doubletop.

Hey, what do you think of a Blackhead Range traverse, starting at Barnum Rd. and ending at Batavia Kill?

Should be free the 24th or 25th.

FWIW (INWM) I'm going to hike in the Catskills Saturday the 17th and Sunday the 18th. I'm not sure what I'm going to hike yet, I'm pretty far behind on my Catskill peakbagging so I am open to anything.

I'm going to be busy hiking locally this weekend, so I can't join you, unfortunately.

I am available both this weekend (1/17 - 1/18) and next weekend (1/24 - 1/25). There is about 8-12 inches of snow in the lower elevations. I just did Giant Ledge today and mane it was cold but fun - fresh powder made for a great trudge up the mountain and nice glissading down :)

I am really up for anything. Have been thinking about doing Balsam. I am local and not working so I have time on my own to do anything nothing really on my "list" although I am going to check out the map and see if anything tickles my fancy :)

I PMed you with my plans and disclaimers.

I've also been thinking about Balsam. One could easily do a circular involving Balsam Mnt. Maybe a side trip to Belleayre to see what that mountain is all about?

Jay, I think I'll bring an inner tube up Balsam and Belleayre and blow it up as I exhale. By the time I get to Belleayre, it should be fully inflated and ready for a spin! :D

Is there any talk of the Blackhead Range Traverse? If so I'm interested. I'm fairly low maintenance in a group and I have a car (I might have to clean it out a little).

Edit: Clarification: This weekend (Jan 24 or 25)

I think we're planning on going the 30th or 31st now, though I'm still not sure if we're doing the Blackhead Range. So far it's Alistair and me, along with some of Alistair's friends.

Alright, all. I've decided to do a Blackhead Range traverse, hopefully with a car spot, this Saturday (1/31). PM me for more details!
