I have just finished reading a very good book written by Christopher Van Tilburg, who is an "emergency" and "wilderness medicine" physician. It is titled Mountain Rescue Doctor He describes in vivid detail numerous rescues on Mt Hood and there is a good discussion on lawsuits and the different opinions as to whether hikers, climbers should be charged for their rescues.
One of his comments is that "the cost of rescues is a hot topic in outdoor Web forums that follow big rescue missions." Looks like VFTT has lots of company!
It was a very interesting read and I highly recommend it.
