Conditions were dry, windy and cold for the season, the trails were in excellent shape and Little Niagara and Big Niagara were receiving average water flow.

Equipment: Warm clothing.

Comments: Went through the gate at a late 9:00 a.m. We had already heard that the trails up Katahdin had been closed for the day due to ice above 3,500 feet. The gate keeper had alreay had a 'long day' with all the early disappointed peak seekers. We were taking two non-hiking family members into the park for an easy walk and the gatekeeper was glad to be able to put us through. We picked a route from the tote road, following the AT to Big Niagara and on the return, we used the trail on the other side of Daicey pond. This was a 5 mile or so very easy hike and I would recommend it if you can't get above treeline or are looking for an easy hike. It passes by several ponds and the Niagaras are worthy by themselves. Spectacular views from the opposite side of Daicey of Doubletop, OJI, Coe and Katahdin. The non-hikers were very pleased and are ready to give hiking another try.
