Trail conditions: Couple of inches of powder on all trails over three to four feet of snow. Powder is not consolidated and made the hiking slow-going. Hancock Notch and Cedar Brook very well packed now... brooks were running but we had no trouble crossing them. Only five people hiked the south peak so the trail there is still very powdery. Heading up North Hancock was very tough -- lots of backsliding in the powdery snow... crampons wouldn't have worked either given the conditions. Two guys barebooting seemed to have less trouble than we did.
Equipment: Snowshoes!
Other comments: Beautiful day... view were terrific along the ridge. The snow pack is so high, you manage to pop out above the trees a lot. Sledding down South Hancock was terrible -- too much loose snow... it was sledding with a pile of snow in my lap. Great day, but long. Thanks to the guys for all the trail breaking they did!
The team: Rocksnrolls, dougeh, ScenicNH and me.
