Lafayette Trailhead Conditions: Big pile of human feces on the trail just outside the tunnel on the Lafayette Place (campground) side of I-93, now snow-covered. Natural gas leak very apparent inside the tunnel.
Lonesome Lake trail, Fishin' Jimmy, and Kinsman Ridge Trail Conditions: Well-packed base and slightly soft surface, providing good footing. Six inches of powder fell Sunday night - shouldn't have much effect on conditions. Perfect snowshoeing surface, but most hikers were bare-booting all the trails, creating just a few post-holes or wallows. I wore snowshoes on these trails, but others wore just crampons or lesser traction aids. Some hikers had no traction aids.
Old Bridle Path and Greenleaf Trail to Lafayette: We wore crampons all day, but microspikes would have been fine. No ice to contend with. Snow-covered summit. Steep sections that others butt-slided were hardening (smooth) as we descended in late afternoon with crampons.
