I am heading out to BC in late July and early August, will be in grizzly country. I would like to borrow a Bear proof container if someone has one laying around.

Thanks

Bear canisters aren't something that are often lent or borrowed, unless you know someone in your hometown or local outdoor club who has one. You might find it easier to just rent one when to reach your destination.

I don't think the cannisters work for grizzlies, just black bears.
If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will point it out in the next nanosecond or so...

Well, not a nanosecond but closer to a few minutes.... :)

Anyhoo, I can't vouch for how well they work as they weren't put to a test, but I do know they are mandatory in the Brooks Range in Alaska, which is Grizzly (as well as Black) Bear territory. You have to show them to the Park Rangers, and if you don't have one they will force a rental/loaner on you otherwise you can't get your permit.

Make it 2 or 3 ns.

They are tested on grizzlies.

* Sierra Interagency Black Bear Group http://www.sierrawildbear.gov/ This group gives formal approvals: http://www.sierrawildbear.gov/foodstorage/approvedcontainers.htm.

* There used to be sierrawildbear.net, but it seems to have been taken over a generic commercial operation. :(

* There seems to be an Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (http://www.igbconline.org/), but I don't see any cannister ratings online.

Bearvault (http://www.bearvault.com/) claims to be "Grizzly & Black Bear Approved". (Does that mean that the bears liked them? :) ) They claim approvals by both The Sierra Interagency Black Bear Group and the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee.

Backpackers' Cache (Garcia, http://www.backpackerscache.com/), doesn't mention Grizzlies.

Wild Ideas (Bearikade, http://www.wild-ideas.net/) claims "The end result, the Bearikade, has withstood rigorous quality control testing at the paws of hungry captive grizzly and black bears".
