trails: frost trail, maple ridge trail, long trail, nose spur trail, laura cowles trail, ccc road, tear drop ski trail, underhill ski trail

conditions: parking at end of stevensville road which is in good shape. frost trail dry and in good condition. same for maple ridge trail which has some interesting scrambles which could be tough in slippery conditions. long trail more of the same. the spur trail up to the nose leaves from the long trail where it briefly runs between the tower access road and the visitor center parking lot. there is a clearly brushed in trail with a sign about radio wave exposure blocking the way. the spur climbs steeply and was actually quite a neat piece of trail. there are still blue blazes, a bit faded low, but quite clear higher up. laura cowles trail was a steep descent, a bit loose in spots. some wet rock required care. ccc road in good shape. dropped down the tear drop ski trail, which clearly gets a fair amount of foot traffic, then picked up the underhill ski trail which ran almost on a level contour back to the frost trail about a mile up from the parking lot. this saved climbing a few hundred feet back up to the maple ridge/frost trail junction. the one unbridged water crossing on the lower frost trail was fine. one big duck under blowdown on the laura cowles trail.

equipment: nothing in particular.

comments: a gorgeous day on mansfield. ended up hiking lots of new trail, to me, as i had only been up to the chin a couple of times in the past. maple ridge trail and the summit of the nose were particularly awesome. quite crowded along the ridge, but pretty quiet elsewhere on the mountain. had i planned better this loop done from underhill state park would have made more sense, but using the ski trails at the end of the day saved me the extra climbing/descending i otherwise would have had to do. great mountain.
