The two of us left from the Garden at 8am. Trail was clear from Garden to JBL to the split to the Hopkins Trail. Hopkins trail was a nice walk for about 2 miles. The other 2 miles were a different story. The "snow spine" aka "ice spine" or monorail was in full effect. It was barebootable, the entire way, but watch for post-holeing . I had brought stableicers with me and used them and they were midly helpful, more so on the ascent to Marcy.
Weather conditions on Friday were rain, snow, sleet, hail and high winds. It made for a slow go. Took 6 hours to get the junction with the VanHovenberg trail and another hour took ascend Marcy. Marcy was a mix of packed snow and bare rock. Due to the poor weather, no views. For time and safety reasons, we hiked out to the Loj and got a cab back to the Garden. 13 hours total. The beer at the Ausable Inn tasted real good that night!
