Otter River, Mass Avatar: Leisurely winter hike o
Trail conditions: Very wet and lots of mud from the mid week rain. Got wet and muddy right from the get go. Many bog bridges through the muddiest sections are on their last legs. Real balancing act in some spots.

Special equipment: Poles were quite helpful traversing some of the bog bridges. No black flies or mosquitoes even though weather was ideal for them, some overcast, some sun, very humid in areas, very little wind.

Comments: First foray to Green Mtns for a 4K. Great hike, but much more slow going than I expected. Was originally going to do traverse, with car spots but travel time was much longer than expected up rte 100 so we decided to do out and back from App Gap. Started at 9 got to Stark at 12 where map on wall in there said 1.8 miles to Ellen. At Glen Ellen lodge trail sign ~1 mile down the trail it was now 1.9 mile to Ellen. Finally got to Ellen around 1:30 and chatted with folks there who had a Lt Guide book, which indicated about 3.7 mile to Abraham or 7.4 miles for out and back, which wasn't going to happen today so we called it a day and finished at 5. Lots of up and down. Everything I read said about 2500 ft elevation gain for a traverse, but it sure seems like a lot more. Nothing real difficult just very slow going. Very pretty trail with great viewing at many of the ski area lift get off areas. Will be better prepared next time.
