Date of Hike: May 12th 2012
Trail Conditions: Ascended via the Valley Way Trail. Mostly dry with avoidable muddy spots. On the last 1/2 mile to Madison Hut the trail was covered with a few inches of hard crusty snow. Microspikes would have helped, but we bare booted it the whole way. Very windy above treeline. The hike up Madison was mostly dry and rocky. We ascended Adams via the Star Lake Trail. There was patchy snow in places, but nothing to slow us down. The wind on Adams was very strong and gusty. We descended via the Air Line Trail. Overall the trail was dry with avoidable mud. We were happy to escape the wind below treeline.
Special Equipment Required: Traction could be used on upper Valley Way Trail, but not necessary. Windbreaker and face mask were worth their weight in gold.
Comments: Optional - Besides the wind, nothing but sun and clear skies for miles. A great day to be out!
