After a seemingly interminable meeting, I needed to get out in the woods. It was nearing 2PM so I chose the loop over south and north Doublehead. Having only hiked this loop on snowshoes (and when I should have had snowshoes) it was a treat to hike it on a sunny fall afternoon.

Trails: Dundee Road to New Path to South Doublehead Spur to Old Path to North Peak and descent via the XC Ski Trail.

Trail conditions - great - even the ski trail was relatively dry! Less than three hours including a long stay on the south peak ledge.

Comments: counter clockwise direction gets the steep done first and allows for a gentler descent via the XC ski trail. The New Path goes up, up, up, with a few short sections of loose scree. Poles really help. Views on sunny south peak from two small open knobs with great views south and westward and a giant open ledge that overlooks Maine, Carter Notch, the Presidential and Montaban Ranges, and many others along with Jackson Village. North Doublehead is kind of gloomy and grown in but an open ledge view to the east including Mountain Pond redeems it. Met only a handful of hikers, one very mellow puppy, and two not so mellow dogs. Even on a sunny afternoon during foliage season it is a great solitude hike.
