Sheba and I parked at Shaft Road off Rt 42 with the intent of hiking Sherrill and North Dome. Had never gine this way and didn't know what to expect. Walked up the road to the shaft and then followed a woods road on and off parallel to the stream. I intended to hike to the "head" of the stream and then up to the col between Balsam and Sherrill. As I hiked I saw that I was close to balsam and decided it would be the first peak that I hiked specifically for the CHH.
The route got steeper and went up through some pretty steep ledges. We finally reach the summit plateau and found the boulder with a stone cairn. I looked for a viewpoint but could not find one for pictures. We then headed almost due east to Sherrill. The route we took was on the high ground between the two mountains and alternated between open forest and brush. As we approached Sherrill I headed slightly north to avoid some ledges and walked up to the summit. I missed the canister the first time and then turned around to find it a short distance behind. At this point I wasn't sure how I might return to the car and decided not to go to North Dome.
I consulted the map and chose a route that appeared to be not too steep and would intersect my route from the way up. I decided to put on the Stabilicers after slipping a few times. I went a little too far south and had to descend into and ascend out of a stream drainage. Once we were back on our previous route I just followed Sheba back to the car. Five hours total for the hike with temperatures in the high 40's, little wind and almost no snow except right at the summits. Check out http://www.catskillhiker.com for more information and pictures
