Did both peaks from, and returned to, Caribou Pond Road (Caribou Valley Road). Steep, well-rocked in general. Easily followed, well-brushed out and blazed. MATC does an excellent job.

The AMC Maine Mountain Guide suggests that "the last mile of Caribou Valley Road is in poor shape; low clearance vehicles should use caution." We got a Honda Civic in to 3.9 miles - about 0.4 from the trail, but the section at about 1.8 to 2.8 miles was the worst stretch. (Btw, I don't recommend taking such a car in on this road at all.)

Our 2005 AMC Maine Mountain Guide lists Spaulding at 4010 feet. The MATC 2004 ATrail guide lists it at 3988, as does the trail siugn on the summit. Whether or not it qualifies as a 4000 footer, it's a great peak.

The 360 degree views from Sugarloaf are aming the best in Maine. Nice views of the cirque nestled between Sugarloaf and Spaulding on the AT route up and down.

Great day!
