What summits within the VFFT viewing area can be summited by bicycle?

There is Washington, Greylock, Wachuestt, any others?

How about Mansfield(VT), Bear Mt (NY) or Cadillac (ME)?

I've seen people ride mountain bikes up Overlook mountain in the Catskills (near Woodstock,NY). The trail is basically a jeep road.

If you are talking about all the way to the top by pavement ... Equinox (VT), Whiteface (NY) and High Point (NJ) immediately come to mind.

You can get most of the way up Frissell (HP of Conn) by mountain bike. Other mountain bike possibilites would include Dorset (VT), Reddington (ME), Bearpen (NY - Catskills) and most of the way up Kaaterskill (NY - Catskills). I'm sure there are many others in the mountain bike category, but those are some that stand out.

Many things along the Wapack Range, including South Pack (auto road, a real puker), Temple, and Watatic.

The rules for biking in the Catskills will or have changed under the new management plan (I don't know if it's in effect yet). It's worth checking with the local rangers for the current status.Until the management plan goes/went into effect biking was allowed everywhere.

Many of the access trails are old carriage roads that are bikable. I've seen tracks that range from overlook all the way to Devils Kitchen as well as on the Terrace Mnt lean to trail. I've been told by locals that people do bike trails that I would consider insane (I think Wittenberg was the one mentioned here). With out knowing your skill level it's hard to answer. The Catskills have been referred to as the land of "three rocks for every dirt" and I alway thought that most any trail was a rim killer. Seek out the mountains that have/had fire towers and take the fire roads: Hunter, Slide, Overlook, Bearpen, Balsam Lake (haven't been on that access road though) are all possiblities.

I think Bear Mnt./Harriman restrict biking on all hiking trails allowing it only on a few dedicated trails.

There are also a couple peaks that I think would be bikeable in the catskills too,but like Warren says, I have no clue whether they're legal. the old Firetower from belleayre comes to mind from Lost Clove.

Harriman allows only bikes around Anthony wayne, but you can bike up to Perkin's Tower. Of course, I have seen lots of bikeable trails in harriman and have seen bike tracks on the LP, the Ramapo-Dunderberg, among others, but the PIPC nazis tend to frown upon it.

The park has also recently paved that road there too. You can bike up Cadillac Mtn though it appears more people just bike down it.

Also you could bike up to the firetower in Sterling Forest. You might even be able to bike to the firetower on Bearfort Ridge in NJ though you'd have very good trial skills.

Mt biking

there's some mt bike rides around lake george; also i believe there's quite a few trails in the taconics. i have a friend who's done overlook ; steep and quite a work out. this really isn't a mountain climb ride but minnewaska st park is a pretty and fun ride. and in the summer you can stop off and swim in the awesing lake (sp?). also some riding up aroung mohonk preserve. i have a couple sites w/ rides up around keene. don't know how many actually go up into the mountains but you can read thru for yourself: here's some of my favorite sites:

Taconic crest:

go here and search for ny trails in the areas of interest:

go here and click on NY

lastly: this is a membership site. but you can click on ny and the region of interest & you should get a brief description of various mtb rides. full description requires a membership but you should get enough info to research on your own. we've done a few of these up in lk placid:

Loon Mountain opens the ski trails to bikes in the off season!

Not sure if you are allowed to ride up Mt Washington
The only days you are allowed to ride up are the practice ride and race day. Even then you are not allowed to ride down, you MUST go down by car.

I'm guessing you could make it to the top of Mt Martha via the snowmobile trails.

To cross threads, as it were, you can bike up Pine Mtn on a pretty good road! In fact biking up Pinkham B/Dolly Copp Rd to get there may be more of a challenge!

In theory, you can ride to the top of just about any ski area mountain, as they usually have service roads which lead to the top of the highest chair for lift maintenance purposes.

Killington has some pretty killer trails for mountain bikes. Only 8 buck to ride the trails, or $30 is you want to be lift supported. Its worth the extra dough. :)

Speaking of riding up Mt. Washington: This year's race winner (Justin England).
