vose spur. hiked 9 5 15. great day for this half wack. 51 degrees at signal ridge trail head at 7 a.m.. Met up with 8 other great folks in parking lot. lots of parking available at that time, but when we came out lot was pretty full. hoofed a good pace up signal ridge trail , then took carrigain notch trail to large boulder about 1.7 miles after split. Had a mini break there, then went about 100 feet further up the trail and took a left at the birch log. This puts you in a small drainage swail that was dry this time of year. We followed that and it quickly got steeper. About 400 yards in, we hit a steep rock out cropping and went straight up through it and picked up the herd path again a short ways later. I think we would have been better off going left for a couple of hundred feet and going around the out cropping because when we came down, we had strayed to that direction and avoided the steep mossy rocks.
Once we picked up the herd path again we just kept heading up making a bee line for the talus field. There were a couple of areas where blowdowns and debris disguised the herd paths, but with a little poking around we found them easy enough again. Talus field was marked with a few cairns and we enjoyed another snack and some great views with a fantastic blue sky. From there the herd path was fairly defined to the summit as we went through some scruffy red spruce. Great lunch break at the top. I drilled a small hole in the canister to work as a moisture drain. Someone already put a new log and baggy in it. If you are going up soon, leave a pencil in the canister because the pen may not survive the cool winter temps.
Round trip with breaks and a long lunch was 7 hours, 40 minutes. After the hike, we took the opportunity to enjoy some social time in the parking lot. Great group to spend the day with. Thanks Danielle for getting everyone together.
