Peaks: Starr King, Waumbec
Trails: Starr King trail
Recommended equipment: light traction, snowshoes
Having worked fairly hard on the Presidentials the previous day, we slept in Sunday yet still found Starr King trail to be like concrete when we arrived at the trailhead in the mid-morning. The re-freezing of Saturday's melt had left the footbed somewhat icy so we elected to wear spikes car to car rather than bare booting.
We found the route to be fast and well defined all the way to the summit which we had to ourselves. There were no trail maintenance issues other than the usual dodging of branches due to snow depth.
We passed a dozen other happy hikers by the time we finished the round trip, mostly in traction but a few each of bare boots and snowshoes. Surprisingly, with all the signs of recent traffic, there were no fresh tracks out to the lookout area. Maybe Waumbec has a reputation for being wooded and therefore no view, but this vantage point has one of my favorite views of the high peaks. It shouldn't be missed.
Notes:
Nice to meet Red Oak on the trail today.
Kibo got her #24/48 winter.
Remember that parking is down across Route 2 this time of year. We don't need to tick off the Locals by plugging the road and parking in their front yard.
