Whiteface HWY Hiking ?

Hi-

When does the Whiteface memorial highway open up to traffic (and hence I think become illegal to hike on) ? If it is open to hikers still, does anyone know its condition ? Is it snow free yet (ie, I would like to find I hike where I can leave my snow shoes and Crampons home, I am thinking the domesticated route on Whiteface might be the ticket) ? Pharoah is an old favorite for this time of year but a much longer drive for me. I assume the hiking trails which go through the forests at 3000ft+ are snow shoe country or at best unreliable WRT postholing.

According to www.whiteface.com the Memorial Highway opens on May 22 this year.

I, too, would be interested in hearing about road conditions from someone who's been up there lately.
