Wildcat Ridge Trail from Rt 16 to Wildcat Ridge (E to A) down 19 Mile Brook Trail.
Date of Hike: 12/06/08
Trail Conditions: Corn snow over ice. 3" to 6" of snow at the base, 20" to 30" snow at the summit and across the ridge. Ice on all the rocks, from 1/2" to 2" thick. Trail was not tracked out at all and no one had been on it in quite some time.
Special Equipment Required: Crampons for the ascent to Wildcat E is required, not an option to use snowshoes. An ice axe (mountaineering) would have been very helpful. At the summit snowshoes are required as the snow is quite deep. Poles were helpful on the ridge. No traction required for 19 Mile Brook trail.
Comments: The trail up to Wildcat E was snow covered with ice. The trail was hard to follow as it was very poorly marked and often times required both hands. Nothing special on the summit, and the trail to Carter Notch was smooth and steady, but traction would be helpful (snowshoes or crampons).
