Please report any bat sightings, especially in the Ammonoosuc Ravine area

Saw that same (?) bat last Sunday around noon on the Ammi below Gem Pool. Also, saw a brown bat at 10:20am in Newbury VT this morning. Have never seen a bat during the day except for this last week. Their wings are translucent in the sun. Amazing and a little bit disturbing.

Missing Hiker in Northern Presidentials - Found safe

I am glad he's ok and I'm sure he learned a lot. He's 17 so he learned as we all learned at that age: by getting in over our heads. He was resourceful in the face of a difficult situation. I agree. I believe that had he brought a buddy this outcome would not have been as good as it was...

    Hale question

Why not scoot down LAH to the hut and ask the caretaker where the best place to setup camp is? There's 52" of snow on the ground at the snow plot near the hut this morning. Aside from staying away from streams and the immediate protection zone around the hut you can probably setup shop pretty...

    Hale question

By all means take the FW trail up to Hale. I would go down lend-a-hand to the hut if that's where you're going. Unless, of course, you want to encounter the attack moose! The whole route happens to be skiable if you enjoy type II fun. From 7D to the FW is a super highway trench at this time...

    Initiating a rescue?

sardog1, I researched which phone number to use for my situation (Ammonoosuc Watershed). I called NH F&G and then the Twin Mountain State Police Barracks. They both agreed it should be the Twin Mountain SP. Just sayin'. Of course 911 would get you there as well and works unconditionally in...

    Initiating a rescue?

I'm quite surprised by how long some of you don't mind being unaccounted for! Since MadRiver didn't specify the time of year and whether you're solo or not I guess the answers are going to vary quite a bit. I'm going to constrain my answer to solo mid-winter excursions. Click here for an...

Old rail bed near USFS Ammi parking lot?

4Khiker nailed it. I'm kind of embarrassed to say that even though I asked this morning I ended up going there this afternoon. That wasn't the plan when I posted, but one thing led to another and I had the opportunity to check it out. After a fascinating conversation with a guy working on...

Old rail bed near USFS Ammi parking lot?

Ignoring blow-down, does anyone know if the rail bed shown below is passable? I'm looking to solve an Edmand's Path parking problem and it seems like it might be possible to ski from the cog lot down to Mt. Clinton Rd. along that bed. Thanks! [Btw, I skied to the E. Path from the 302 parking...

    Little River Crossings?

Jim, although I haven't been up there in a few weeks, given the amount of time I've spent crossing rivers in the Whites during the last week, I would bet you a beer that they will be wide open. The recent thaw and rain reverted the crossings to early November.

Trailhead Parking Restrictions: Little River Rd.

I was truly a newbie to the LRV last season so I read here about 7Dwarfs and tried Franz who didn't return a vmsg. (This year I got him right away). I then called the Trudeau Rd. office of the WMNF. They didn't know what to do, but said they would call me back. They did a little research and...

Trailhead Parking Restrictions: Little River Rd.

This weekend will be the first time this season that I'm trying the winter trailhead. I'll look for the signs and report back, but I bet that bridge is exactly what the landowner doesn't want used. (Which is a darn shame because it gives perfect access to the spur!) My guess is that he's got...

Trailhead Parking Restrictions: Little River Rd.

Hi Little River Valley Winter Enthusiasts. Last winter I made contact with the owner of the land surrounding the end of the Little River Rd. He kindly granted me access to the winter spur of the North Twin Trail. The spur runs through his land. He asked that I call him each time I went out...

Catching Up with The Twins -- 1/27/08

Hey Double Bow! Great report and good to meet you up top. Thanks so much for the S. Twin traverse beta. Many thanks also to the VFTT community in general who do more than their fair share of trail breaking and provide incredibly useful info in the condition reports. You guys are seemingly...
