"Only One Hill:" Mount Washington Road Race, 6/18

I want to congratulate you. I participated in this event back in 2002 and its one tough race. Training on steps in the gym will not help much. You have to train going up real hills. Well done. Overall time is not important. The challenge is huge and completing it is an accomplishment.

Joshua Tree National Park... and other places... #2

The Death Valley sand dunes are indeed a nice place to hike. Last November, after hiking in Sequoia and Yosemite Nat'l Parks, I hiked in DV salt flats and the Mesquite Sand Dunes. Absolutely awesome, especially if your the first person to hike on the sand ridges. Check these photos...

Plenty of ice, ice, but no baby (or snow!) on Colvin and Blake 1/3/11

Brendan, I was with Neil and Spike in the Lower Range. I saw your 'Hi Neil' comment in the register book. Neil could not figure out what the scribbling was. He's getting old, you know, and his eyesight is not as good as it used to be. He can hike me to death, however, the old fart. Very icy...

Lower Great Range and Sawteeth on ice.

Well done yesterday, Neil. I had a mixed day. Only a hundred yards past the gate, walking on the RHS of the road to avoid the icy patches, a tiny branch grazes my right eye and takes out my contact. Great! Just before retreating back to the vehicle, I remembered keeping a spare pair of contacts...

Awesome hiking trip in the American Southwest

Good morning, Audrey, ... an early bird. I hope that you are aware that for any overnight stay in the Grand Canyon, that you have to apply for a permit and choose your intended campsites. Visit the official Grand canyon website for details: http://www.nps.gov/grca/index.htm You can apply up...

Awesome hiking trip in the American Southwest

I recently had the pleasure of taking my wife on another splendid outdoor adventure/hiking trip in the American Southwest. This trip was particularly interesting because of the wide variety of terrain on which we hiked. If you have a bit of time, you can check this web link where I post all of...

Views from the Top and Bottom: Great Grand Canyon Day-Hikes

Amicus, We may have crossed paths on BAT on Nov 9th. I was coming out of the canyon that morning after spending the last 6 days backpacking from Hermit's Rest (trailhead at the tail end of the West Rim drive). We had wonderful weather (except late Nov 8th, at Indian Garden, and a chilly Nov...

    Moderately-paced Pemi Loop - 8/21

Dave, Congratulations on a super pemi Loop. I did my 1st one on Sunday. Just hiking and smelling the roses. I added Galehead and West Bond. Although feeling like Superman on Bondcliffs, I ran out of gas in the last 12 km on the Wilderness Trail (forgot to keep fueling my body after the ridge)...

    Half Dome

WHOA !! Now those are very nice pics of the hike up Half Dome. I'll be going there late October prior to a backpack in the Grand Canyon, so I did a bit of reading on Yosemite and Half Dome. The cables will be removed by the time I get there. That's OK because our trip will only be an...

    Speedy Pemi loop

Ha, all I had to do was to do a search on this forum for the Pemi Loop. This recent thread by Neil answered all of my questions: http://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?t=36418&highlight=pemi+loop.

    Speedy Pemi loop

Steve, Cory, Thanks for the feedback. I realize that starting and finishing at the same place means that I will end up with the same elevation gain and loss either way. I was just, and still am, a bit confused. Others have recommended the CW route, but I like your reasoning. Is it the long...

Not Your Average Dix Hike and a 46R Finish, August 14, 2010

Congrats on your 46th summit. I'm only 2/3rds up on my list of 46, but I have already tagged Dix as #46. I will keep your post in mind when I get there. Up the slides seems like a viable deviation from the regular trail approach to the summit of Dix.
