OK, I wasn't excatly hiking, but we raced (galloped) to the top of the snowmobile trail and came to Mirkwood. I love this trail. The photo below mine was taken on the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway.

If that is the piped spring off the burr and burton trail, I've seen it both exploding and at a trickle as well. I was disappointed the second time because it had been so spectacular the first, but I supposed it had to do with rainfall.

There are a number of shelters before and after those peaks, but yes, if you want to camp away from other people, you should be able to find a spot if you're not near treeline.

I think this is Hell Brook, the first crossing on the Long Trail north of Smuggler's Notch, last June. Frenchman's was much worse that day, but my pictures are blurry. The whole trail was under water from Whiteface on down. The photo below mine is of a Vermont summit in winter.
