Thanks again for all the replies. I used a First Need many years ago and have also had an MSR. I didn't like the weight of the FN but got it due to its wide range of de-bugging. I have used a PUR recently but it left an aftertaste of iodine. After reading all the posts I may go back to the old...
I've never used down mitt's under my OR shells. But have always had good luck with wool. I have thick ragg wool for super cold(-10 and under) days and a lighter pair for most of the rest of the time. I use thin polypro. liners as well.
OR shells are the bomb. I have a pair I've had for 10 years. Use them with a thin glove liner if its on the warm side and with wool mitts if its chilly. Both if its really cold. Those shells are great and worth the cost even if they don't come without their liners.
I did that hike many years ago. We had day packs that we used from our site on the Ermine Brook. From the top of the slide to the summit took close to 2 hours. Through the most brutal cripplebush ever. It was an adventure and alot of fun. From our site we started at 7 am ascended the slide and...
John,
Thats great. Sounds like you had an awesome hike. It's good to hear that there is a little path started. When I went there was none. You just had to use the edges of the ridge to keep you going the right way. It was interesting to be in the trees with such a steep drop off on you sides. I...
I am wondering if anyone has summited Santanoni via. the Ermine Brook slide this season?
About 10 years ago, a friend and I started in Newcomb, spent 1 night at Newcomb Lake, continued to Ermine Brook the following day for night 2.
Rose early, ascended the slide to crippling bush and a mile or...
We just got a Kelty Ridgeline a few months ago and we like it. Our son is 18 months and loves riding in it.
It has a seperate zip off pack for the little one if they want to walk some or for short jaunts around camp. The padding is good enough and it is very adjustable. There are also many...
I don't know about any of the rules, but I do know that the Sven Saw is the cream of the crop as far as lightweight, collapsable saws go. They slice through limbs like a hot, knife through soft butter and are very packable.
On the cover of the Oct. 2004 issue of Backpacker is a nice picture of Elk Lake. It leads to an article about America's last wild places. Lets enjoy it while it lasts.
About 10 years ago i went up Buck in the Lake George area at night. It was early march and we used snowshoes. There was not much moon so we had to go with headlamps the whole way. It was great fun and easy to stay on the trail, due to the track already made. Started at 10 pm and was down by 2...
