    Grand Canyon Suggestions?

spent 4 days down-in with a poorly arranged/last minute campsite reservation- basically rim to rim to midway in July many years ago:(. My tip is to hike at night, it's cooler figuratively and literally, especially if you have a full moon, it felt extraterrestrial.

    Cabin Recommendation in Allegany S.P.?

x/c option 2 I believe they still rent xc gear for cheap at the trailhead (and have a hot chocolate hut) if you don't have your own...but you should consider bringing your own sled, there is a nice 1/4 mile run my kids and I broke a sled on(and nearly a tail-bone;) ) nice variety of cut xc trails

    For the climbers out there!

wall surface get creative and experimental you are not making a violin. I used a hodgepodge mix of left over oil and acrylic paints with paint sand in it. The oil and acrylic paints don't mix so you get strange random patterns when it rolls on and the sand comes off but most remains. I have...

    where's my *&$#(@! headlamp?

Yeah, wow, this is the view behind the curtain. The kids, and some friends who adventure with us seem to think this organizing and packing just happens- POOF- Magic time! Our basement too is a tidal pool of gear which just barely makes sense to me, the keeper of the mayhem. I keep core...

Cell phones work fine in Canada good coverage on the east coast and in BC otherwise I'm not sure- although they do cost more dough.

Gothics 5/19 in rain, rain, rain and then it rained

Went up the Ore bed route with a few fit newbies. Constant rain after JBL (thanks to George the caretaker for finding frozen Marcy bars even though you were closed- tip him well!) but no thunder and lightning. Trail is in pretty good shape save for some larger blow down and water erosion above...

    Slain by a Giant ?

Giant black and blue and ice all over Wow if that was the ridge trail you went up in snow shoes then I'm impressed! We went up the ridge trail Saturday with crampons all the way and passed several snowshoe-ers(?) making bruise filled retreats, it was basically ice all the way. We came down the...

    El Cap Gully

That was the best website I found when I looked into this route. Unfortunately I have only gotten as far as scouting the approach to the route and talking with some of the Yosemite guides in the valley climbing store. The main beta was "stay left" in the upper reaches where it becomes true class...

    Algonquin via Non-standard route?

Algonquin lines Funny, I had a similiar query last winter about this time of year-particulary regarding interesting ski/boarding decents but couldn't drum up any beta :(

    re Saddleback, Basin and Haystack

Go the wrong way Did the "wrong way" (according to many- and perhaps all rangers you will speak to) a few weeks ago, Saddleback then Basin (after a diversion into NF Gothics) with very full packs as part of a multi-day trip. The axe man is correct about the views in this direction-primo and...

    Great Range Traverse in Winter?

via ferrata technique via ferrata involves more than a couple lengths of webbing and biners-there are mechanisms of shock load absorption -home made and commercial. A fall on static webbing and a cable system can yield up to a factor 2 fall if no friction from body (on rock) and/or devices...

    The Gothics

TR ice if you don't mind bushwack/post holing then: the chapel pond canyon and the quarry in Cascade Pass (grade 4-4+ish) across the road you could also snow climb Green Gulley and throw ropes down Cascade Falls (2+or3) otherwise short stuff to be had roadside in chapel pond area or Little...
