For anyone who might be going to the ADKhighpeaks gathering and traveling the Northway in the Lake George area, the book is available at the ADK Headquarters in Lake George, just off the Lake Luzerne exit. Dick

The Catskill 67: A Hiker’s Guide to the Catskill 100 Highest Peaks under 3500’

For those forum members who hike in the Catskills, or for those who have been thinking about doing so, there is a new guidebook in town. Forum member Alan Via’s book, The Catskill 67: A Hiker’s Guide to the Catskill 100 Highest Peaks under 3500’, has finally been published. Alan asked me if I...

    Current Conditions in the Daks

DEC has a list of recommended hikes while the cleanup is going on (here). Pitchoff is specifically mentioned. I imagine this list could change frequently. It might be best to call the ranger beforehand.

Can I carry Microspikes on board my flight ?

When we flew to Patagonia (2009) and Haute Route in Europe (2005) we put our poles in our duffle bags (checked) both times with no problem. Joanne fashioned a styrofoam protector for the tips. Of course, regulations change, and vary from airline to airline, so I would call them to be certain...

Pocket Rocket safe for Grand Canyon heat?

Though we did it in May (too late in the spring, IMO, at least for that particular year), our MSR Pocket Rocket did just fine. Our high temp (unusual) was c. 104. I think average temps at Phantom ranch in July are c. 106. I see nothing in the literature about maximum temperature use. I also...

Black fly reports for your area?

Did an overnight to Siamese Ponds, Adirondacks this past weekend. Mid-70's, no wind. It was buggy, but not horribly so, except near the vlei at the bottom of the shoulder over 11th mountain (brutal), where one might expect them to be bad. These were mostly mosquitos, not black flies, and were...

    Hiking info?

All excellent suggestions above. I would add Phelps for a relatively easy 4K peak.

    Bug Dope & Bug traps

I have read (and posted somewhere on the forum) that the maximum effective percentage of DEET is something like 35% (I forget the exact number). 100% DEET is no more effective; it only lasts longer. Certainly longer than citronella products.

    Bugs?

We hiked Cat and Thomas Mtns. (west side Lake George) last Saturday. Bugs were out in force that day. It rained in the AM, and there was virtually no breeze to keep them at bay. Some in our party got lots of bites, others relatively few. For some reason, they all but disappeared in the...

Black fly reports for your area?

Though I think I ingested most of them, there were still plenty of black flies to go around in Lake George (Cat & Thomas Mtns.) this past Saturday. I used DEET, got a few bites, but not too bad. One in our group was new to these critters and they drove him insane, even with DEET and a headnet...
