    Yes Yes, I routinely try out new equipment (stoves, sleeping bags, tents) in the backyard. Not just for survival practice, but just general use. Who wants to be struggling with unfamiliar equipment or a new technique in the cold, dark, wet and 10 miles from a trailhead?
