Only have a short window this year - any suggestions for a weekend?

Thanks! We're not necessarily seeking steep as a requirement, more seeking the maximum quality to be found in a short weekend trip. Am I reading the rules right that you can hike out the giant ledge and camp on the ledge? That sounds nice! Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Only have a short window this year - any suggestions for a weekend?

Last year VFTT was incredibly helpful in planning a 5 day backpacking trip in the Whites, and now I'm back for more! This time unfortunately I have a much more boring and generic question. Due to family issues and work this year I won't be able to take any days off work, so our trips will be...

Norther Presi Loop - Our first trip to the Whites - not without complications!

All absolutely valid points. I may have left out that even with all the setbacks, this was by far the best backpacking I've ever done on the east coast, and for a first trip on trails that I had no first-hand info on, we did pretty well - never lost, never in (great) danger, safe and sound every...

Norther Presi Loop - Our first trip to the Whites - not without complications!

After some conferring with the caretaker and other Crag guests, we decided that given that all our gear was soaked, that one of our group had a pretty deep bruise on his thigh, and that we didn't know what our pace would be like the next day, we decided that going from Crag to Hermit lake in one...

Norther Presi Loop - Our first trip to the Whites - not without complications!

A group of three friends and I set out on August 8th, planning to do a three night Pinkham > Hermit Lake > Perch > Osgood > Pinkham loop. It was not to be. We arrived at Pinkham and checked out the NWS forecast and saw that Friday (our big ridge day) was forecast to be rainy (1/2" to 3/4" rain)...

Temporary Closure of Lincoln Woods trail

Looks like they are starting work on the 5th: Date(s): Aug 1, 2013 The Lincoln Woods Trail will be open for recreation this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, August 3-4. The Lincoln Woods Trail is anticipated to be closed beginning early next week, in preparation for major trail repairs. This...

3-4 day alternatives to Pemi Loop for early August (LWT Closure)

Thanks for being so helpful jfb! I guess we'll keep our options open for camping - hopefully an early start Friday will get us to the RMC sites before everything fills up. Seeing as the Osgood/Clam Rock camping will be Saturday night, I'm inclined to camp at the first open site we find, but...

3-4 day alternatives to Pemi Loop for early August (LWT Closure)

Cool! Have actually been getting excited about this new route, which beats the depression about the closure of the LWT! Interestingly I see the Israel ridge path on the AMC map, but not on the US Topo, but it IS on the USFS Topos that CalTopo has - is it a new trail? After doing some reading...

3-4 day alternatives to Pemi Loop for early August (LWT Closure)

Thanks for that info - I've had terrible experiences backpacking in the Adirondacks looking for dispersed camping and just passing mile after mile of dense undergrowth and swamp. How would you rate the north Presis vs. the west Pemi loop?

3-4 day alternatives to Pemi Loop for early August (LWT Closure)

Well a slow night shift is allowing me some time to do some research! I mapped out this route based on recommendations from VFTT, the maps, and what looks good to me from reading the topos. http://caltopo.com/map?id=3139 any thoughts? My concern would be snagging a tent platform at Osgood on...

3-4 day alternatives to Pemi Loop for early August (LWT Closure)

Hi All - I got some great trip planning advice from VFTT members on my first ever post here advising me to do a Pemi loop with some new-backpacker friends rather than attempt a non-hut Presi traverse. We're all set to go so of course Murphy and his law weigh in, and the Lincoln Woods trail...

Temporary Closure of Lincoln Woods trail

If you've planned a trip for early/mid august with friends and you're coming from afar and you were planning on using the LWT, then to you, it is a big deal - it's all about frame of reference. You don't have to be in the majority for your feelings to be valid.

    Canoe Camping?

Hey everyone - just wanted to report that we ended up doing the Bog River/Lows Lake and it went really well! Great Success! St. Regis Canoe Outfitters were superb. Here are some photos from the weekend. http://imgur.com/a/SeGoM Thanks for all the help!

Temporary Closure of Lincoln Woods trail

Well hmmmm - I have pretty firm plans to do this hike: http://caltopo.com/map?id=7L4M with four friends from Aug 8-11 - I guess it depends when "early/mid" means! When they say that the east side trail will be open - I guess that means you could hike in on the east side and then ford the river...

Want to do a Presi traverse in Aug - but not in one day.

Quick question - are the AMC White Mountain maps the same as the ones that come with the White Mountain Guide, only tyvek? I'm going to need a durable map on the trail. Also saw that the NatGeo maps cut the Pemi Loop onto two maps /facepalm :)
