Cool camera...not so good for hiking

It's mahogany; I'm guessing African mahogany, although Honduras mahogany sometimes has that ribbon effect. BTW, in the 18th/19th centuries cherry was sometimes called the "poor man's mahogany." I was recently perusing a collection of 100+ year-old photographs, some of which were labeled as...

Total lunar eclipse "on" the winter solstice

Thank you, Papa. I'll fix it on the next edition. Not that I didn't believe you, but, the ultimate authority nowadays is Google. "Saving" got 1,530,000 hits. "Savings" got 1,310,000 hits. At least I'm in good (or bad) company, including The Providence Examiner, Fox News, Long Island Press, The...

Total lunar eclipse "on" the winter solstice

Actually, the fall equinox and full moon were not on the same date. The equinox was 9/22, 11:09 pm, EDST; the full moon was 9/23, 5:17 am, EDST. Now, if you happened to be in Nova Scotia or points east, they would have been on the same day (the 23rd). That's the problem with most calendars, they...

    Adams 4

You wouldn't know her. Lucy was a romantic. She was a poet friend of J.G. Whittier. In one of her poems she rechristened half the peaks in the Sandwich Range. Afterwards, I think it was something like the 1880s, AMC adopted some of Lucy's suggestions in an effort to standardize nomenclature for...

I take it you're not a romantic. Here's another: Larcom in the Ossipees.

Some unusual activity in the Ossipees

Looks like two oaks and a spruce. Definitely done this fall. All the chips are on top of the leaves. The oaks aren't very big and there's not much of a spruce market in the Ossipee area, except for pulp. Last I knew, timber trespass fines were 4x the commercial value. Wouldn't be worth...

    Passaconaway Loop

A lot of ups and downs on Walden. The distance isn't much more but the effort is. This loop was the introductory hike we occasionally used for the WODC summer trail crews to see what sort of shape they were in. I think it's a much more interesting hike than up and down Dicey's.

Blueberry Ledge Trail on Whiteface (NH)

You shouldn't have any trouble. I've carried 40 lbs of trail tools (including a 5' pry bar) lashed to a frame pack loaded for a three-day trip over this trail on my way to Sleeper Trail and when I was done I still thought it was quicker than using either McCrillis or Downes Brook. And definitely...

    Loon, Loons and more Loons

Andrew: I don't know. I'm seasonal and a victim of the economy. Every year they have to let me go earlier. This year I finished up the last week of August. Was it a body recovery, a rescue, or just a report of a loon in distress? John Cooley would be the person to ask at LPC (476-5666 or...

    Loon, Loons and more Loons

Having worked with loons for the past three years as a biologist with the Loon Preservation Committee (loons are a state-listed threatened species in New Hampshire), I've gotta add my two cents. Loons are individuals and have a range of personalities. Some of them have a strong curiosity. I've...

    12,000 Ossippee acres closed

If you are referring to the group willing to do mitigation work, I suggest that you go back and review post numbers 96 and 121 in this thread. So there's you, me, bandana4me, and a number of people who chose to PM me, and it's up to them to relieve themselves of their anonymity. If the...

    12,000 Ossippee acres closed

Let me get this straight. Someone decides on his own to reopen closed trails, “improve” some existing bootleg trails (which it turns out that the landowners were trying to reclaim/repair) , gps as much of the woods roads and skidder trails as he can, all on various privately owned parcels. He...

    12,000 Ossippee acres closed

After I posted that, the text of the easement was posted, which showed that there was more than just protection from development for the trails; public access is definitely part of the easement. However, there is also a clause that allows for limiting access when when other natural resources are...

A Real Corker Coming This Week?

9.5" in my driveway, Tamworth (NH; not England, not Australia). Still snowing strong inspite of the fact the radar says the tail end just passed us. Nice, dry snow, but dense.
