    A good year for Voles?

I've been hiking in the High Peaks for a while and haven't seen that many voles around. A couple of weeks ago my wife and I were on the summit of Upper Wolf Jaw when one ran up to us looking for food. We watched him for a while and then moved on to Armstrong summit where another vole came out...

    Need Catskills suggestions

Batavia Kill is a nice spot with some good day hiking options. One other good place for camping sites is by the West Kill in Spruceton. Tent sites start maybe a mile in or less with a good supply of water (and pretty) nearby. Day hikes of Hunter Mt. in one direction or Westkill in the other...

    NY DEC Signs

I do very much want to make my own. I was almost positive there was a website with the exact specs but I can't find it now. I may call the DEC office in Northville. I think that's where they make the signs. Maybe they'll even lend me some paint...

    NY DEC Signs

I know I saw a post on this one time but I can't find in the archives. Does anyone know the specifications for the DEC hiking signs? Not the disks but the wooden "trail to" ones that give the trail and mileage. I would greatly appreciate it. Looking for the size and the color paint, stain...

    John Robb Leanto (Catskills)

My wife's friend told her the other day that John Robb leanto on Hunter Mountain burned down. Not sure if it was an accident or not. According to her DEC isn't planning on replacing it as it's too high. Just curious if anyone heard anything about this. I always liked John Robb, much better than...

    Pharaoh Mountain Caves?

I hope you keep us posted if you find the caves on Pharoah Mountain. There was a tower on top at one time. Often the old tower observers would locate caves near the summit to store stuff to keep it cool. We explored one last year in the Catskills although it was pretty small. In the Pharoah...

I wonder if DOGS enjoy hiking and peakbagging?

I'll third the pound dog vote. My "hybrid" pound pup is terrific on the trail and extremely enthusiastic. When he was younger we had to put him outside while getting our pack together because he would tear through the house when he knew what was going on. He's still enthusiastic but a little...

    Favorite Camp Food

I'm with you, nothing fancy at the end of a long day although that changes with car camping. My real consideration is ease and volume. I was recently out for a week and brought some Mountain House, Backpacker's Pantry and Enertia. I only took one meal for Enertia and several of the others. Very...

    Trail Running

I just consider trail running anything that isn't pounding my feet on pavement. I try and usually work at least one off-pavement run a week to give my joints a break. Nature trails and local parks are perfect and first thing in the morning you are apt to see all kinds of cool wildlife.

Comparing Hiking Miles to Running Miles

I had this discussion with an accomplished runner at work when considering a training program. My problem was when when faced with a choice of doing a long run on a weekend or doing a hike there was no choice-I'd do the hike. He suggested I could occasionally substitute a 20 mile hike for my...

It's hot out! Do u still go hiking?

My concession to the high heat is making my post-hike ice cream a large instead of a medium. Of course I have to eat it faster because it melts quicker. Kinda curious what everyone considers a lot of water or is there some formula? On hot days I'll generally drink four liters or so but I've...

    Schroon Lake lodgings

I've stayed at the Drake at liked it. Clean, cheap the people were friendly and they let me bring my dog. I'd stay there again. If you want something more rustic a little outside Schoon Lake you can rent a yurt near Minerva. Falls Brook Yurt

    Pharoah Lake (ADKs) Ski Condtitions???

Thanks, this winter has been a bit disappointing so far for skiing. Looks like I'll be headed to Newcomb this weekend.

    Pharoah Lake (ADKs) Ski Condtitions???

Has anyone skied into Pharoah Lake recently? I'm planning a ski trip in via Mill Brook this weekend and wanted to know if conditions were any good, especially after today's tropical heat wave. Santinoni Camp is my fall-back plan. Thanks!

    Hunter Mountain

Thanks for the invite! I'm leading a trail run that day, however. I had fun the last time I climbed Halcott. It was a few years ago on Earth Day and I'm pretty sure you were on that trip. There was a big Catskill 3500 group and then a big ADK group afterwards-quite a crowd for a trailess peak...
