    Too Old to Hike?

I'm 76 years old and still hiking, camping and kayaking - enjoyably so. Am going out on a maintenance trip this weekend.

South America Trip Recommendations (Machu Pichu)

Back when I was in the Peace Corps in Bolivia, I traveled to Machu Picchu. VERY beautiful... We slept out in the ruins - no longer allowed. An other nice place to visit is Cuzco - you will likely travel through it on your way to/from Machu Picchu. If scheduling allows, stay in Cuzco on...

    Grout Pond, VT in winter

You used to be able to stay at the cabin. It had a stove in the 4 bunk bedroom and a fireplace in the main room. As an earlier post said, it is now closed - you can't stay in the cabin. The trail around the pond is (was) restricted to snowshoers and skiers. Trails to/from Sommerset and Kelly...

    Kahootla microspikes

Great on Mansfield I used my Katoola micro spikes on Mt Mansfield last weekend. They worked extremely well - including on ice covered rockface (as long as it wasn't too steep). Great and sturdy.

    Mansfield 2/18/12

Sunset Ridge Trail Didn't need to don our 'shoes at all. Non-crampon traction was needed in some spots and beneficial in many others. My Katoola Micro Spikes did very well. Temps were quite cold but the wind was only strong near the peak. Many people were going up. Dick

Green Mountain Club names new executive director

New GMC guy As VP for Trails and Shelters in the CT Section of the GMC, I say let's give the person a shot. I'd like a bit more outdoor experience but his organization and fund raising experiences are great. Within the GMC, the word seems to be positive.

    going to baxtah! beta welcomed

Chimney Pond Had been to Chimney Pond a few years back for two nights - one at the cabin and one at a lean to. Absolutely beautiful! First weekend in June with much snow around edge of smaller pond and MANY black flies. Great place. Hard not to like. From another Nutmegger further down...

    How old are you ?

A 67 yr old little boy Good thread Chip. I did a lot of hiking/camping/canoeing as a kid thru high school. Then came a lull in college, Peace Corp, marriage, grad school, 4 kids, work. Did some day hiking/KOA camping things but not much more. Got back into it when I turned 50. Now I'm on...

    1971 White Mountain Backpacking Trip

Greeley Pond Leanto Great pix. I still look back fondly to that leanto and think of it as one of my favorite campsites. Did it in '59 with a US Army rucksack that had 'Made in 1942' stenciled inside the flap. Unfortunately, I don't have any pix from the trip.

    Eggs?

Eggs last fresh or frozen When in the Peace Corps down in Bolivia, the little stores just kept the unrefrigerated eggs on a shelf. Then again, they had to since we only had electricity from dusk til 9pm. They kept for a goodly while but the yolks did turn somewhat orange after 4-5 days. I'm...

    Have you been ‘labeled’?

Hateful labels This is a problem with most clothes; not just hiking stuff. They seem to be there for the manufacturer's ego, liability prevention or governmental 'feel good' laws. I rip them out...

    Pants

Zip-off pants The zipper on my first pair of zip-offs wasn't long enough for me to easily get them over my Vasque boots. My current pair does. Check this out before leaving the store. I use them summer and winter. I'll vary what I wear under/over them based on the weather. Pants + Shorts =...

Water level/crosssings of East Branch of Pemi River

Totoket and I are going to be hiking the Pemi, Bonds and Twin Range between Sept 19-22. I'm curious about the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River. Given the lack of recent rainfall, does anyone have any beta on crossing that river while carrying full packs. I'm particularly wondering about...
