    Ecco X-Factor Kilamanjaro GTX Boot

Hi, does anyone have any first hand (foot) experience with these boots? I think they look pretty cool and the technical description sounds good. Before I buy them I wanted to see if anyone has used them. Thanks in advance, Happy Holidays!

    MSR Reactor anyone?

I remember when the JetBoil first came out a few years ago, the reviews stated that it did not work well at all in cold (below freezing) temperatures. Now that it's been out for a while, I imagine many/some of you have a JetBoil and take it up into the mountains in the winter. Anyone know how...

    Boots and Blisters

So I have a pair of Asolo FSN 90 GTX boots that I bought a few years ago. I feel like I've broken them in quite well, and have worn them on several multi-day winter trips in the whites and catskills. I'm still getting REALLY bad blisters on the back of my heals. I'll spare the gore but lets...

Best Snowshoes when Crampons would be better

Thanks again. I've been hiking/camping in the winter for several years, each time renting snowshoes from REI. They have sufficed. One year I bought crampons to supplement the rented snowshoes. The crampons broke (Black Diamond Contact Strap - the rear hard plastic binding sliced in half by one...

Best Snowshoes when Crampons would be better

I understand that there are situations that are appropriate for both. My intention is that I want to buy a pair of snowshoes, and can't also afford to buy a pair of crampons. I have enough experience to know that they co-exist for a reason. I'm going to check out the MSR Lightning Ascent's...

Best Snowshoes when Crampons would be better

If I find myself in a situation where all I have is snowshoes but crampons would be better suited for the terrain, what is the best pair of snowshoes for that situation? I want to buy a pair of snowshoes, not a pair of snowshoes AND a pair of crampons. I know that I will be in some situations...

Sugarload, Twin, Devils, Overlook and Plattekil

I've planned a quick weekend jaunt with some friends and thought I'd check in here from some advice, comments, suggestions for the following two day trek: Leaving one car at the end of mink hollow trail and driving the second car back to start on overlook trail. day 1 hike about 7 miles to...

Good camping location for outdoor beginner

My wife has finally expressed some interest in camping, and maybe some low impact hiking. I'd like to go up to the Kankamagus Highway or around that area. Can anyone recommend some good places to car camp, which are close to some easy trails that I could take my wife on. We did Boulder Loop many...

    Going to Kilimanjaro

A friend of mine (a woman) is going to climb Kilimanjaro in June and is looking for a great pair of cross-training, gore-tex shoes that are waterproof (preferably Gore-tex) and preferably with a vibram sole (or something similar with excellent gripping power on rocks and slick surfaces.) Any...

    crampon bag?

I used a carabiner and strapped mine to the daisy chain on the back of my pack. Be careful though. Don't use a cheap marketing gift carabiner, get a good light one that has a locking thread. I had carabiner failure and lost one of the crampons on the trail. :(

    Recommended crampons?

I second the vote for Black Diamond Contact Strap crampons. I used them for a traverse of Wittenberg-Cornell-Slide (came just short of Slide :( due to weather) They worked really well in the icy scramble sections. Very good footing. I will add though, that the rear binding plastic severed...

    Boot suggestions for winter??

I've worn the Asolo FSN 95's for multi-day trips to the Whites and Cats for the last three years. Once moving, they have kept my feet warm and toasty in temps hovering around 0F and slightly below. I haven't warn vapor barriers and at night I stick a hand warmer in each boot and stuff them into...

    Fire Etiquette

Firewood For what its worth, I was at the Terrace Mtn Leanto in the Cats two weeks ago, and my friends and I were very fortunate to have found a HUGE blowdown, elevated off the ground (leaning on another tree.) Our weekend was cut short due to the blizzard that rolled in Saturday afternoon...

What do you think about this gear?

I guess if you keep your filter warm (in your bag, inside your jacket, etc.) then it might not be a problem. But you can't rely on filters working in the winter.

What do you think about this gear?

Use either iodine or boil your water in the winter. If its below freezing, not only will the residual water left in the filter free and render the filter useless the rest of the trip, but the freezing water in the filter will cause the filter to expand and break, possibly rendering it useless...

Non - outdoor people wearing the gear - does it irk you?

Haha, You are forgetting the curse of the A-Rod! As for non-active people wearing "active-wear" - someone earlier mentioned the people buying for fashion adding to the companies bottom line, and helping keep the cost down. The revenue from these non-active people are also funding R&D to...
